and I'm wondering if any of the motels in the area have shuttle busses to get back and forth with instead of having to drive all around town.
Does anyone know? She'd adore seeing the panda's at the zoo.
Or are there tour busses that go around town?

Yes, there are tour busses that take you to all the tourist sites and you can hop on and off all day long along the route.

Take the Metro (subway system) to the Zoo. The pandas are really neat to see. I do volunteer work at the Zoo and I really enjoy the pandas as well as the other animals.

The Embassy Suites mentioned earlier is a very nice hotel in Alexandria. The Hotel Washington is right downtown and is close to the National Mall and is reasonable priced.

The Metro is a great way of getting around and the Tourmobile is a great way to see all the sites. You can buy one day or multiple day passes on the TourMobile.

Be sure to see the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, the Air & Space Museum, the Bureau of Engraving & PRinting, The Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Capitol. All of these can be seen while on the TourMobile. You can get off, tour the site, and get on another TourMobile just by showing your ticket.

I was born in DC, lived in Northern Virginia, and have family there that I continue to visit regularly today.

My recommendation is to find a hotel/motel in Northern, VA (I got a good deal through priceline.com) and use the Metro (subway). Most hotels are either within walking distance of the Metro or offer shuttles.

Last time i went i took a friend on the Tourmobile. It isn't cheap ($20 per person) but it was fantastic to be able to jump on/off all day long.

Also. something to note - the Zoo is not in close proximity to the National Mall (where the museums and monuments are mostly located). You definitely want to use the Metro to get to & from the zoo - the parking is limited and expensive.

Good Luck! I bet your daughter will love it.

If you do priceline -I recommend you choose the following areas: Arlington and/or Crystal City. Both are decent areas and should have plenty of access to Metro Stations. Alexandria/Old Town and Springfield do not have plentiful access to the Metro. I am not very familiar with the other areas of DC. I've been successful with those two areas and getting good rates on nice rooms in the area (and most have parking facilities for your car).

The Metro is the best way to get around DC - and even there is a station by the zoo. Don't know what your budget is but I stayed at the Embassy Suites in Alexandria which was right across the street from the Metro station - which gave us easy access to all the sites to see in DC - If you can find a hotel/motel thats within easy walking distance to any of the Metro stations, that would be the way to go.

You won't need shuttle buses, use Metro. It's safe, clean and cheap. Rather than stay in a hotel 45 minutes from the city and far from anything to do, consider some nice in-town options that are affordable and in great, safe neighborhoods. Check out the links below. The Kalorama Guest House on Cathedral Avenue is my favorite. It's in a very upscale neighborhood near the zoo, Metro and lots of shops and restaurants.

I was born in Washington, DC - So many wonderful things to see and do. Be sure you take your daughter to the Smithsonian - especially the Air and Space Museum - it is truly awesome ! Geared to ALL ages, she will love it ! Wonderful Zoo - many species ! The Metro can get you to all these places without costing an arm and leg !!! Go to the art galleries and don't forget our beautiful Memorials and government buildings! Enjoy !!

Our metro bus system and metro rail system are accessible from pretty much any hotel in the city. They travel outside of the city as well to parts of VA and MD.
