My housemate got it a few weeks ago n so did her mate who was visting (they however had different strands of it), n then now her bf has it. Both times it happened after they spent a few nites at his house (normally they stay at ours). They ate the same food so how come they got it at different times and where/what is the source??

They may not have washed their hands well after having a BM and then touched the food they were eating and gave it to themselves or the virus may have lingered on the faucet and someone else touched the faucet then touched their food with damp hands with the virus on it etc. There are tons of possible sources including the food they ate if it was packaged by someone not washing their hands well or prepared by someone in the house who didn't wash his hands well after using the toilet.

I posted a site address that describes what to do to avoid it - it could have been any of those reasons. Personally, I clean everything and use anti-bacterial spray on doorknobs, the bathrooms, and any other places that everyone in the house touch on a daily basis.

E coli is caused by contamination of food with fecal matter

maybe they don't wash their hands properly after going to the bathroom, or washing after sex or maybe they bought contaminated food
