the only thing i can tell you is to look up info on the Internet i have a 7 month old macaw parrot as long as you do not let them stay in there cage all the time they are great they learn to talk but to buy one at a pet store is 15hounded they are the best because they have been to a vet have blood work done to make sure they are in great health and do not have any bird disses they are sexed so you know what if you are getting a male or female you must train him or they will get mean bite scream and pull there feathers out you have to have at least 5 hours or more a day to make sure they do not end up being mean mine is great he talks he is healthy and loves people and kids and dogs everyone in the house gets along great but he always has someone that is talking to him the more play time you have the more people talk to him the faster and better they learn so i would look at book and on the Internet let your mom know they are not bad at all they are great for pets as long as you have time

maybe tell her u will save ur money up for one. i suggest getting a baby male parakeet. at the petstore they are about 20$. Only get one if u want it to talk. All it needs is love, u, a cage, food and water daily, a good cleaning about every week or so, and some toys. just be sure not to have toys with mirrors. this will ruin the human bird relation ship.
** birds are very relaxing. They are very good companionships. U have to dedicate time though with them. Once they are tame, it is like having a best friend. I have 14 birds. Wouldn't u know they are all parakeets.
** BE SURE TO GET A MALE. they are more likely to talk. Males have blue CERES. a cere is the piece of skin above there beak. Parakeets are also small. when they are babies the cere of a male is more brownish pink. talk to the people at the pet store for picking out a male.
*** BE SURE TO HAVE TIME! if u want it to talk u must spend around 30 minutes with it each day. Pick a simple word like "hi". Repeat it in the same voice over and over. Be paitient. Some learn slower than others. Once it learns one word the other words will come easier.

**** U SHOULD TELL UR MOM..................... u will care for it, clean it, buy it, they aren't that messy, and they teach very good lessons. They teach responsibility. IF she lets u, u will have a life long companion.

HOPE SHE CHANGES HER MIND!

Show her this message. My Mom was once like that, but now we have 12 birds. I have 2 doves, 3 cockatiels, and 7 budgies(used to be 3 but they had 4 chicks). I'd suggest that you should get a cockatiel. I think the normal grey teils are the best ones. You can teach then to talk. There quite smart to. My bird knows how to coo like a dove, make a watter running sound, the wolf wistle, pretty bird, hello(witch comes out as hellyou or heelo). He'll sit up on my should all day and preen my hair. They don't require alot of attetion or care, and can intertain themselves vary easily. There very good with children, and very easily tamed and trained.
A cockteil dosen't get hurt that easily, and dosen't carry any life-harming dieases.Getting a bird was the best choice of my life. I think that they are better than friends. They require a daily feeding and an all time water supply, they love to take baths, and do not require a cage.

I suggest taking her to a bird store that you have already scoped out. Find one with a bird you like, but it doesn't have to be the bird you ultimately want to BUY. See what I mean?

Introduce her to the kindest bird you can find. At first she may freak a little, my mom hated birds. But if you can get her to hold one, especially one with a lot of personality? She may be hooked.

Also, birds that can talk are expensive. The bigger the bird, the bigger the poop. I had an african grey (one thousand dollars!) and it pooped huge messy wet blobs. If you don't clean them up right away, they dry like cement to the floor, the table, the cage, whatever. So your mom is right, they are a lot of work. And they don't keep their poo in the cage, they have a way of pooping the second you take them out. Or pooping to the side, so it flies out of the cage!

The best small talking bird is a parakeet. get a male. If their cere (above their beak) is dark blue, it's a male. They are more likely to talk than a girl bird.

Check out youtube.com for talking bird videos. Look for one called charlie the budgie. (Budgie/keet same thing)

Next, if you decide talking is not as important as a nice bird, get a cockatiel. They are larger, often say one or two words, and are very sweet if you spend a lot of time with them.

Green cheeked conures are playful!! Hard to find. Very sweet and enjoy toys more than tiels.

Honestly, I say get a parakeet :) Spend time with it every single day. If a few days go by, especially in the first year, and you don't spend any time with the bird, it will get mean.

DO NOT get mirrors in the cage. The bird will fall in love with his image and hiss and bite at you. Also, don't get two birds. Same thing.

Finches are a big no, unless you want several in a cage. They do not talk, do not play with toys, do not like human contact.

COnsider going to a good bird store, or even petsmart, and spending some time with their birds. But buy from a BREEDER As they are often half the price of store birds.

Maybe you should take your mom to a bird show or even some of the pet places that specialize in birds are always fun. Fun, because you get to interact with the animal and see all the different beauties available. That way you can show her and discuss the issues she may have with a bird. Don't get me wrong--Parrots are a lot of work! They need fruits and vegetables provided daily (along with seed/pellet diet) they need their cage cleaned everyday---and constant attention. Your mom may be apprehensive because it will be a lot of work. And this is an animal that unlike a dog or a cat---can live to be 60plus years. But together you can provide a loving home for a new family member.

I think getting a bird is kind of good. I suggest to get a budgie they don't talk but they have a very good price of about $20-$35. Then after you have shown your mom how responsible you are you can probably get the one you want that talks. I got my first bird because at first I was failing my classes and my parents didn't want to get me anything and then I got my grades to A+ and they told me what I wanted and told them I wanted a bird and keep my grades up.

Birds are cleaner that having a dog or cat.
They pose no threats of possible allergic reaction, such as pet hair and dander does.
They are easier to feed.
They don't take up much space.
They are cheaper, for a cage, water dish, feeder and food than like for a dog a water dish, a food dish, leashes, collars, shots, immunizations, vaccines, replacing anything they tear up or eat, etc.
Singing lifts one's spirits
They can be taught tricks quicker than a dog or cat can.
They are quite a bit smarter than cats or dogs.

...must I go on ?
:-)

Just prove to her that you are responsible enough to handle a pet. If you have never had a bird before, start with a parakeet. They are cheap and easy to take care of. And they can be taught to speak.

i read somewhere that African Greys are the easiest to teach to talk

parakeets, boys are more likely to talk
but when they are babies, like they are when you buy them from the pet store, their ceres may not be an accurate representation of their gender. I had a bird I named Princess, i was sure he was a girl, but he turned out a boy. THeir ceres change with time.
Also, the cere trick does NOT WORK with YELLOW parakeets

Just a note, no matter what bird you get, there is no guarantee it will talk. You should get a bird because you want a friend, not because you want a little toy that mimics what you say.
