I feel that Mark was the winner of the 500 because the wreck was before the cars reach the line. Nascar should have and did not wave the yellow flag when the wreck happen, like all other times when a wreck happens. If there is a wreck, then yellow is shown, it does not need to have someone injurd because the drivers are rasing back to the line. Wreck happens, yellow is shown then, not after the fact! Mark is the winner of the race.

If there were laps to go, throw the yellow. But not on the last straightaway on the last lap where throwing a flag at a certain moment would have decided the winner. All these comments about how Martin was robbed lack on simple piece of truth - the two swapped the lead a couple times down the stretch. So if NASCAR wants Martin to win, they throw the flag when he is ahead, if they want Harvick to win, they throw the flag when he is ahead. They did the fair thing and raced back to the line.

Edit - I have found UNDENIABLE proof that if the caution came out when the wreck started, Harvick wins. (Thanks to StarFoxIV on the Harvick Hotline)

As much as I would have liked to see Mark Martin win this race, and regardless of my feelings on whether or not Nascar was right or wrong in not throwing the flag, I have to applaud Mark Martin for showing the kind of class he is famous for. After the race, he commented on the fact that the yellow was not thrown, and then congratulated Kevin Harvick on his win! In my book, that makes Mark Martin a winner in his own right. Interesting fact that in not throwing the caution until after Kevin and Mark crossed the finish line, the "official" results showed all those wrecked and banged up cars as "still running" at the end of the race...Bottom line is: Congratulations to Kevin Harvick for an awesome move to get to the front on the last lap, and congratulations to Mark Martin for being the class driver of the field!

fist of all nascar did throw the caution as soon as harvick took the lead. If you would have listen to the post race show they said that the race finished under caution. AT the time of the wreck martin was the leader not harvick. Nascar throw the caution when harvick was 10 feet from the line. I had family members at that race and they all said that as soon as harvick took the lead the yellow lights came on. So nascar cheated martin and thats that.

Everyone will have an opinion on this one. I was for Martin, but felt they should race to the finish line. The yellow is to keep the drivers from going around the track and getting involved in the wreck. This wasn't going to happen since it was the last lap. At least Edwards didn't win!

With the current rules as they are in nascar, you are right. Nascar should have hit the yellow before the pass, and it screwed Mark Martin. I'm not really a fan of either driver, but I'm not blind either

I guess that's Brian Frances new nascar, Personally I Don't Like it. And most likely will stop watching all together

I think Kevin deserved this win. Let's face it, this race was really no different than many other daytona finishes where it's decided in the last 100 feet while there is a melee of cars behind them spinning and crashing. This was what racing is all about. I would like to know if this question would have been asked if it had been kyle bush in martin's position or david gilliland . I doubt there would have bee any stink then because it would have been the vetran showing the young guys up but because it was a sentimental favorite everyone is upset. I respect Mark Martin and would have loved to see him win yesterday but I want to see him win a race not under caution. Call me old fashioned.

The wreck happened behind them. Why throw a yellow if the wreck was behind the leaders? Harvick won the race fair and square in my opinion. Throwing the yellow flag coming out of turn 4 would have been pointless.

As I watched the replays of the last lap mayhem - I noticed that the reason they didn't throw the yellow out was because the wrecking cars were sliding out of harms way. They did throw the yellow after Harvick crossed the line cause the 07 got hit and spun back up into traffic.

Is anyone else wondering why Kenseth pushed Harvick so hard to the win? Okay, I understand they are no longer teammates (kenseth & martin) but still, Martin WAS Roush, and without Martin, Kenseth would have no car. But thats why they race, right?
Congrats to Kevin for giving us our money's worth. And hats off to Martin for taking such a heartbreaking, devastating, demoralizing, makes-you-want-to-put-a-bullet-in-your-head loss so well.
I can most assuredly say that I would not have been so gracious in defeat.

I agree with you. NASCAR has been very inconsistent about throwing the caution flag. The wreck happened when Martin had the lead. He and Harvick swapped the lead even after the wreck, and then they said the race ended under caution.

if the roles where reversed and harvick was leading and martin was coming up fast and nascar waved the yellow you would be singing a different tune. there was no need to wave the yellow, the wreck was behind the leaders on the last lap. let the leaders race it and a winner be declared on the track the way intended.
