You obviously are new to the game. Let me try to help .......When you assume your stance, be sure to flex the knees, bend from the waist but keep the back straight.
Let your hands and arms hang to the ground in a normal fashion.
Now that you have the correct posture, grip the club with the same natural extension of the arms. Take a few practice swings and make sure that your club brushes the grass.
With a ball in front of you follow the same swing plane and keep your eye on the back side of the ball as you swing. When you are chipping, make sure your weight is on your left foot (for right handed golfers). This should be about a 60% left and 40% on the right foot.
Hope this helps. There is nothing worse than hitting consistently bad shots.

When you say you hit them on top of the club, do you mean you're hitting them fat. You would have to take one heck of divot to hit the ball on top of the club, in fact, you would probably hurt yourself or at least sprain a wrist. Perhaps you mean you're hitting the ball thin or topping it. In either case, try adjusting your grip up or down on the club. Kinda like choking up on a baseball bat. You didn't mention how tall you are, height does play an important role in fitting yourself with the right clubs.

I've got to be honest, I don't understand how you can hit a ball on top of the club. You'd have to bury the head really deep to do that.
I can understand if you tend to hit the ball of the the toe or heel of the club, but not the top. Can you explain further?

Sounds like a timing issue with your tempo. You might try putting your feet together and hit a bucket of balls only using a half swing. I practice this shot with a 7 iron. It is also a good way to fix the shanks and get your timing back on. Watch the pros many warm up this way.
(Keep your eye on the ball!!!)
