Our dog has been scooting his butt across the carpet and licking it excessively. He isn't having any problems pooping. I want to take him to the vet however they won't except payments and I don't have the money up front. I am very concerned and want to know if he is going to be ok and if there is anything I can do to help him. We are going to take a stool sample to the vet this week however they also want ot see him because they think his anal glands moght need to be expressed. I have noticed that after he poops he seems to relax a little more. He lays down instead of scooting all over my living room and he doesn't lick at his butt as much so maybe it is just the anal glands. Whoever would like to write back please do! I am very worried, our pets are part of our family and I would be devistated if something happened to him.

Scooting behavior is most likely full anal glands and/or tapeworms. The rice like particles sounds like tapeworms. They come out in segments and can look like rice or sesame seeds. Sometimes they will be moving and look flat. They get tapeworms from ingesting fleas. You may say he has no fleas, but if he is ingesting them you may not see them. Get some Advantage or Frontline which will kill the fleas as soon as they jump on him. He will still need to be dewormed for the tapeworms.

The vets are probably right. Most of the time butt scooting is actually full anal glands-not worms like everyone thinks. The rice looking things are tapeworms whicha are caused by ingesting fleas. You should get the vets to do a fecal (which you said you were going to do) and then they can give proper medicine to kill any and all internal parasites they find. Then you need to make sure your dog, house and yard are all flea free to prevent reinfesting the dog and causing more tapeworms. I would recommend giving your dog a flea bath first and then wait 2 days to apply a topical product like Frontline (kills fleas and ticks) or Advantage (kills fleas only). If you have any cats or your dog comes in contact with any cats do not use Advantix- it is advantage's product that kills fleas and ticks but it can also kill cats. They have a bad reaction to it and can kill the cats so beware. AdvantAGE is ok. AdvantIX is not for cats who come in contact. Also you need to vaccuum your house thoroughly and immediately empty the bag/canister into the trash and then put it outside in your dumpster away from the house. This will decrease the chance of any fleas jumping out of your trash can and getting back in the house. Finally you need to treat the yard with a flea killer. your vet could probably recommend a safe brand. You need to treat anything your dog could possibly get fleas from to get rid of the flea problem all at once.

Well the flea things are some ideas you can do in the mean time to help get things under control. I would definitely have them check his anal glands. If they are full and do not get expressed they can get compacted (which is painful) or even abcess (which is even more painnful) so I would get them expressed. Sorry so long. I hope this helps

Oh and the worms you know for sure he has cant be spread to you or other animals unless they igest fleas. Most over the counter dewormer doesnt treat tapeworms so make sure and read the labels if you try and buy otc. however the shots the vet can give make it a lot easier and work better.

Rice particles in your bed or in your dog's poop? If the rice particles did not come from your dog than maybe we should consider expressing those annal glands first.
Hold your dog's tail up, depress a finger on either side of his anus and pull together gently but firmly then pull out as to put pressure from the sides but behind the anus, and squeeze so that the glands excrete into the opening of the anus. It is smelly and very easy as long as they are not impacted and can be expressed. The first link below may explain that better.

With worms that are rice like they are often tape worms which come from being bitten by fleas. Tape worms do not leave much that is diagnosed microscopically however many of the wormers for them are Rx. You might want to read some of the descriptions on the wormers bellow and see if you can find one that would be effective on tape.

Get that doggy to the vet.

Make sure you get an estimate on what they want to charge you. If it's too much money, then tell them you're going to shop around for a better price, or just let the dog die. Even though you're bluffing, they won't know that, and they'll drop their price.

Vets have you by the ballz, so they'll charge you an arm and a leg for $50 worth of work. It should be illegal, but they do it anyway because there's no other way to cure animals, and typically they'll get an emotional woman in there who will spend and amount of money to cure her beloved malty-poo. Don't let 'em getcha. Play hard ball, and your dog will still live and you won't break your bank.

Sounds like your dog has worms

Parasitic worms are as common as fleas to dogs and, especially, to puppies. From the half-inch- long hookworms to the flat, segmented tapeworms that can reach three feet in length, But in most cases, worm detection is easy and treatment is effective.

However, ignoring possible symptoms and necessary treatments can lead to serious illnesses and sometimes even the death of your dog, as well as the possible transmission of a worm infection to both you or your children.

Common Signs of Worm Infections

Some of the common signs of worm infections are listed below, but these may also be symptoms of other illnesses. When ever your pet is acting ill, we always recommend an examination of your pet and an analysis of a fecal sample.

Common Signs of Worm Infections:
-A change in your dog's appetite, a distended abdomen in puppies, coughing of hiccupping resulting from the coughing up of worm larvae emerging from the lungs. Weight loss, weakness, a dull coat, vomiting or diarrhea observing the worms-either round worm, which looks like spaghetti, or tapeworm segments that look like grains of rice in the stool or on the fur.
-Exercise intolerance, due to heartworm.

He needs to be checked for worms and have his anal glands expressed. This should not be that expensive. Have you asked how much. You say they are part of your family. Well if another family members butt itched I bet they would go to the doctor.
