A medium size crate will be perfect. But NEVER use the crate as a form of punishment! Also if you are going to be keeping the dog in the crate while you are at work, make sure that it is big enough to be space, but at the same time, if it has to go potty it wont use the crate and still have room to move away.

I would either contact the facility or person your are getting the dog from and ask them. If they do not know i would take the dog (once you have him) to a store like petsmart that allows you to bring your pet in. I would then go by these requirements, that the pet can stand up, sit down, turn around and lay down comfortably. Those are the airline requirements.
If the dog is a puppy i would buy the crate larger to compensate for growth. Good luck...

Go ahead and get the mdium. Mind you some crates come w/ a divider so while she is a puppy you might want to give her half the cage. I made the mistake of buying a small cage for when my ESS was a pup, now that he is nearly a year old I still keep him in a crate only I had to buy a second crate, because I was not thinking about the future MEA CULPA!

Rat Terriers are pretty small so a medium crate would do just fine.

You need a reasonable size so the dog can be comfortable but not to big because then the dog will poop and pee in it because they dont like to p&p in the area where they sleep so if its too big they will go to an open space and let it out.

do you know what the "mix" part of her is? If it is a large dog you may need to go to the next size crate. Check your Thrift stores, I have gotten some nice cheap crates at the ones near me. You don't want one to large as this will be her den and safe place.

A dog crate should be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around inside it. It should also be long enough for him to stretch out a bit. But it should not be so big that he could "poop" in a far end.
And ratties come in so many sizes, you'll have to figure out how big he'll be when he grows up.
There are also crates with panels for growing room. You move the panel as the pup grows.

You need to get a small crate, so it feels cozy (like a den) to her. That way she won't soil in the crate. If there is too much room, she will do her business in her crate because she will be able to move away from it...they don't like to soil in their crate, so the smaller size is better. She will be comfortable if you add a pillow she can curl up on.

Dogs like smaller "dens". Whatever you do, DO NOT use the crate as a form of punishment.
Go with medium.
