My personal opinion: There are dogs with aggressive bloodlines and there are greedy people who take advantage of that and train their pits to be dangerous. There are also morons who don't realize that a dog with a lot of strength needs a lot of training.
I adore dogs and I firmly believe that having one is a big responsibility. If you have a dog who can do as much damage as a pit bull (look at those jaws!), you are OBLIGATED to train that dog to behave itself 24/7.
There are no bad dogs, only bad/lazy/uncaring/unthinking people who don't do what they should for them. Many pits I have known are absolutely fantastic dogs - I even know one who does not need a leash, he just knows where he's supposed to be and stays there, no matter what. Unfortunately, as soon as a neighbor sees him off leash, his parents are going to be in big trouble... SO unfair!
A pit who has not been trained is like an army tank that's been left running.. it can do enormous damage if nobody's paying attention. That is no more or less true for that breed than for a german shepherd, rottweiler or even a dachshund, if the circumstances are just right. The difference with a pit is that they have been bred with those incredibly muscular locking jaws, and, when one has bitten you, you will STAY bitten until someone pries them off. Again, not the dog's fault.. the breeders preserve this trait, even though they don't necessarily have to.
Breeders of all sorts of breeds have ruined or enhanced the fine traits of their dogs; it would really be nice if there were more responsible pit bull breeders who could select smaller jaw muscles. Unfortunately, since pitbulls are so commonly used in dogfights, the scumsuckers who have them for that purpose do not even think about such things. Bright side - when these dogs are rescued, they are spayed/neutered, IF they are adopted. Dark side - many cities now require rescued pitbulls to be put down instead of readopted. Again, for this, I blame the people rather than the dogs, for the state the breed has gotten to.

They have a bad reputation for a reason, they are not bad dogs, just bad pets, over all, they were bred to fight, there are so many court cases involving pit bulls and the shelters are full of them, they are dangerous dogs that can freak out at any time. I am a dog lover and don't like labelling a bread as bad, but I sure wouldn't want one.

It depends entirely on the owner. I have several friends with Pits who are the sweetest most loving dogs in the world. But you hear all the time about Pits who attack other dogs or people, however my mother was attacked by a Golden Retriever. It's all about how a dog is raised.

No Dogs are BAD DOGS, but they are Trained by Bad Owners Yes Plentiful....
Even a Lion and Tiger can be tame.... What do you think of a Bad Tiger?
It might be in their instinctive nature, but a Good Dog Owner will be able to train them and they won't be called Bad Dogs.

Don't buy one.
They should only be in the hands of experienced trainers and owners who won't let them around other dogs.
I love dogs, and I've been around pits that are great dogs, but 90% of all pit bulls are purchased by KIDS who want to look tough. Pit Bulls are animals, not a thug accessory.
They were bred to fight other dogs, so even a good pit bull will still get that good feeling of reward for fighting other dogs. That's problematic. It's in their nature to fight.

pitbulls are bred as fighters. its very difficult to train out years of instict but no, generally i don't think they are bad. If you can keep control and train them properly they can be as docile as any labrador. Rotties, dobermen and many other "Dangerous" dogs have proven this time and time again. Consult a few breeders before jumping into it though, they will agree that many "Aggressive" dogs are just the subject of bad press ruining thier reputation

Nope they can be quite nice family pets.... they need good owners and badbreeding can cause some aggression problems. but for the most part like any other breed bad owners =bad dogs. and besides i watch out for the little nasty poodle down the street....or the cocker on our walks that is never leashed....little dogs are more likely to bite...

Dogs have been bred for various reasons and, in time, those traits become instinct. I am under the impression that Pit bulls have been bred to fight, so I would stay away from them. I have read many stories of a docile Pit bull turning on people (usually kids),
