Well my 2 really like to keep up on current events :-) Seriously though, it's not just newspapers, it's books, magazines, writing letters, paying bills, etc. They just want attention or they think that whatever you're doing is obviously cool since you're doing it and they want in on the fun. They think they're missing something because all your attention is focused on something other than them. But if it's just the paper you're having trouble with, it may be because they like the crinkle sound. Mine love paper grocery bags and those little aluminum type crinkle ball cat toys.
But as for an actual scientific reason, I can't help you there. I'm just going by my own experiences :-)

Hiya, Cats love paper, they love the noise and they will sit on any paper that has been left lying around no matter how big or how small.Plus they are not daft they know the paper is warm.

They like that you have had your attention focused on something else and they can turn it back to them in a nano second by lying across the paper and pining your arms to your sides.

My old cat used to sit on the newspaper, always on top of the article you were reading. If you then decided to read a different article (so as not to disturb her) she would move & sit on top of that one instead!

Because when you're reading the paper they can't see the headlines.
Simple solution: Put your cat on the headrest of your chair or on your shoulder and you can both read it together.
Yay!

I know!!! My girlfriends cat used to completely ignore me, which was fine by me, a kind of mutual dislike thing was going on. Until that is, i was lying on the floor with a copy of the Sunday Times spread out in front of me. Then it was suddenly the greatest place to lie and have its big fat ginger *** tickled......
