According to the Christian interpretation, Satan exhibited vanity. Which is why he was thrown out of heaven. This sin is far, far worse than any commandment God gave telling the Israelites to kill every man, woman, child, and infant in a neighboring city.
In 1st Chronicles chapter 21, Satan also entices David to number the people of Israel, again a sin of vanity, for which David is punished by God.
But strangely, in II Samuel 24, which is a telling of the exact same story, only written several hundred years earlier, it is God that incites David to number the people of Israel, so that God might punish him.
So it's not entirely clear whether Satan did this or not. Must be one of those glaring contradictions in the Bible for which there is no logical rationalization.

Funny thing is this. First off God hurts far more ppl in general in the good book (floods, famine, fire, war...) The two things the devil is given credit for are not his fault entirely. In the book of Job he and God start out in a conversation (god still speaks with him, hummm). God gives him PERMISSION to abuse his best follower. He literally says go ahead and do anything to him BUT kill him (no mercy). Of course there is also the book of Revelation where Satan supposedly brings about the end of the world. But then once again it is not attributed to him fully. God brings about alot of it. Only God knows the time, his angel has the key to the "bottomless pit"-and opens it, and it is all part of His (God's) plan...
Speaking of revelation; my friend is a Satanist and he says the book of revelation gives the number of the saved as 444,000. Too few for jews or christians-but about the number of Satanist in the world... It also says many will fall having been deceived into following the dragon disguised as the lamb. The Satanist have one commandment- "do what thou wilt, but harm no other". Scarey thought that christianity may have backed the WRONG guy?

I think the very first thing was when God gave Satan (the most beautiful of His angels) reign over his creation and Satan then tried to take over (didn't appreciate the authority God gave him); and we've been paying the price ever since.

There really isn't much attributed to the 'Satan' character in the Bible.
God does all of the really nasty stuff, and the rest He orders his followers to do.
And they still do.
