I am white and Jewish. but you`r letter dose not insult me in the least. in-fact i comp letely agree with you. i am deeply ashamed of my white brethren. i mien i am a Christin and believe in the morel of forgive and forget.bot sometimes it seems like the white people are having a harder time forgetting then the black. i think that white people as a hole do not treat blacks completely equal i mien we say oh we do treat the blacks with equal rites.its just that they don't get the same privilege's as the whites be-cos all that the blacks do is sit around in the slums and don't educate them self's. Well that is a complet lie be-cos the blacks are just as smart as the whites if not smarter. and if their are any uneducated blacks its be-cos the whites denied the blacks from getting an education in some way or another. weather it be from dining them the position of a hie paying job so they code pay for school. or they chaste them away from school with being racist.and if their are any blacks in the slums its be-cos of the same resin.but in any case I'm sorry this is so long and it do-sent rely answer your question. i just wanted you to no that i do not think that White people have a rite to tell black people to forget until they've forgotten.

Yes, some white people ARE ignorant and insensitive, as are some Asain, Mexican, African-American, Indian, etc. people are. But just because there are some ignorant and insensitive people of all races and ethnicities, that doesn't give you the right to assume ALL people of that race/ethnicity are that way because THAT is being ignorant on your part.

I do agree with you, however, that those people who say to forget about the slavery and injustice that has happened to African-Americans ARE totally ignorant and insensitive. And I really liked your example about the Holocaust...you're absolutely right - who would go up to a Holocaust survivor (or a family member of one) and tell them "Oh get over it...it happened years ago"? To undermine the Holocaust or slavery just because it was in the past is pure disrespect and it is unacceptable.

Oops...I just read that you requested black people only to respond to your question. Well I am white but I do agree with what you had to say, with the exception of generalizing all whites to feel a certain way. Proof in itself...I am white and I'm not ignorant or insensitive. Don't let a couple stupid white people's ignorant opinions shape the way you think of all whites. That would be just as prejudice as a white person saying something bad about blacks, based on a couple blacks they've encountered. It ain't right either way you look at it. Let's be fair.

Ok I'm not black but I had to respond to this. I would never ask a black person to get "over" slavery it's a part of your cultural history, however many cultures/races have survived ordeals at the hand of another race or culture and not every ethnicity goes around with a huge chip on their shoulder. I'm sure some african- americans would say I'm racist for saying that but I'm not racist. I recognize that there are a lot of racist people out there but they are all colors and ethnicities. I see lots of racism towards every race including white people. All I'm saying is theres a difference between remembering what happened in the past, honoring history and using it the wrong way. We should all remember our history and try to learn from it not use history as an excuse to hate each other. And if we all truly want to change things we ALL have to make an effort there have been lots of times I have seen a white person get treated unfairly because a black person assumed they were racist without even getting to know the person. If a white person were to enter a neighborhood that is mostly black people especially in a large city like Los Angeles or something what would happen? Isn't that wrong too?

I think your analogy of the Holocaust is problematic, because the possibility of slavery returning is extremely unlikely, whereas the possibility of genocide occurring again - well, it's happening right now, to people in Africa.

The systematic scapegoating of an entire race of people for political purposes is the central issue of the Holocaust - unfortunately, it's a human trait to blame the "others," and in that context, we should never forget the Holocaust. Not that I'm trying to diminish the issue of slavery in America, but let's face it, you never had to pick a bale o'cotton. Rather than dwelling on slavery, your time might be better spent focusing on current issues that affect Black people.

But that's just the opinion of an ignorant and insensitive White person - take it for what it's worth.

I think as a civilized society all people must get over the wrongs of the past in order to advance. Almost all nationalities and religions have been persecuted at one point or another. There is a difference between living in the past and forging ahead, while still respecting those that have suffered. You should never forget what blacks endured in the past, but you should not hold grudges against those that are no more responsible than you, yourself.

Unfortunately many of those same white people (I am white) would tell the Jews to get over it. They are unable to see that the current racism and diversity issues are not simply about the atrocities that happened, but the ideas and feelings that are still prevalent.

You are correct, it has not been that long, and there are many people still alive who remember segregation. There are still issues in society today. For example the number of CEO's of Fortune 500 Companies that are minorities or women is extremely low.

In my opinion, as a society we need to do more to educate everyone about the issues of racism and diversity that are still out there. Many whites, unfortunately, just do not see racism as a problem anymore. Partially because in our egocentric society racism does not hurt them and probably benefits them, so they are unable to see a problem with it.

I'm sorry that you still running into people who deny the effects of discrimination.

well i have to apologise cos I'm not black but would like to answer your question. firstly i think you have probably come across a lot of bigoted people in your life. you are letting these people influence you and your thoughts so that from the beginning of your question YOU sound racist! i don't agree that you should 'get over it', unfortunately it did happen and if it weren't for a lot of people, such as martin Luther king, Rosa parks, to name but two, it may still be happening today. i cannot comprehend that this has happened in my lifetime! again, we should never forget, nor should we forget the holocaust, nor the treatment of the native American, again, naming only a few. be proud of yourself and your heritage. sue

If you are in your 50s or 60s then I won't say anything because you lived it. If you are 18 and talking about slavery and reperations, then I would say...yes it was bad, I didn't do it I had some pretty mean and stupid great, great grandparents...get over it, it shouldn't stop you now from becoming whatever you want. Look to the future not the past. All people(race, religion, etc..) have their time in history when they were persicuted...even all us "white" people.

Because they haven't had to deal with racism themselves in the context of being a minority, and also because people are d!cks to them about things that happened hundreds of years ago or lump them all into the same category. Maybe because they don't know a lot of non-White people or are just brainwashed and set in their ways. Obviously it doesn't apply to all white people though. Your example is retarded AF. The only racist one is you for assuming that white people didn't help that woman because she was Black. Also, they aren't required to help her. "Smh" nothing. You're racist and make it difficult to feel sympathy for a woman who just lost her children. You're also sick and demented and SICK if you think the death of two innocent and sweet beautiful babies is an excuse to perpetuate your racism.

The fact that you are generalizing one whole group of people or race, is just as ignorant as the statements some people make about slavery and the Hallocaust.
I understand your being concerned about these times in history, but if you're using them in order to gain something for yourself, then I suggest you rethink your motives.
Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it.
Good luck.
