I know this is bad-logic - like 'if all dogs smell, all smells are from dogs'. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it? I suppose this question is an extention of the 'tree falling in the woods' one. Any thoughts?

The only cogent explanation of consciousness is that it is a manifestation on the level of extremely complex biological structures of a reality which really exists "all the way down." That is, every reality, even down to elementary particles, possesses some degree of interiority. In this view, "matter" and "consciousness" are really just two sides of the same coin, or two manifestations of the same underlying "stuff."

And to the above answer about quantum theory: many people have indeed hypothesized about a connection between consciousness and decoherence in quantum sensitive brain structures.

I've heard the idea before - isn't it basically an anthropic version of the copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to the whole universe?

Its like if we collapsed the wave function of the Universe maybe its only this way because we all consciously observe it with our minds... Its a bit of an odd opinion though. I much prefer the many worlds interpretation. They all sound a bit far out but then... quantum physics is very strange indeed. Bohr said said anyone who is not shocked by it, hasn't understood it.

I don't think consciousness is a quantum mechanical phenomenon, so I don't think consciousness is required, its interesting that its possible though, I'll grant you.

No, consciousness is not required for reality to exist in a material form.
