Just buy a pure breed toy dog. Don't fall for the "designer dogs" that are so popular these days.
Folks are trying to "build" new species of dogs in order to appeal to the public (mostly the American woman between 16-35).
A "Yorky Poo" or a "Malty Poo" are not real dog breeds. They are cross bred to create a 'look.' It's not natural, and it's not good. Inentional cross breedings like this can lead to big problems, particularly because they are often bred for small size, meaning, the breeders are trying to make their puppies as small and cute as possible in order to sell them for thousands of dollars.
A lot of times, these dogs are crazy and go wild all the time because their DNA isn't natural anymore.
Look at Pure bred, AKC registered litters. Any Toy breed would be good for you. My personal favorite is the Yorkshire Terrier due to intelligence, loyalty and independence.
EDIT** I would also recommend NOT rescuing a dog from a shelter, if this is your first dog. After you have experience as a pet owner, dog rescue is a very noble deed, and you'll be better suited for the problems that could come from a rescued pet. You could get lucky and get a very well-balanced, happy pet from a shelter, but there's also the chance of finding a problematic personality, and you'd be a lot better off in that case if you already had dog experience. Just my $.02

Chihuahua. Mine is 3 months old now. The best thing thats happened to me was getting this chihuahua. They want to be with you all the time so make sure you have time to devote to it. Mine is potty trained so I asume they are easy to potty train. Truly a great lap dog if thats what you want. I also have a german shepherd and they get along great.

Beagle. There are plenty of rescue sites as well as Petfinder. Beagles love people and are happy to be lap dogs. And they are the cutest dogs.

I think you would like a girl rorkshier terrier they are sooooo cute but you have to make sure you can brush it every day and have the right food and care for it. Maybe you would prefer a big dog like a golden retriever they are sooo cute and lovable.

Almost any dog would love to do that. I would stay away from the 'nervous' dogs that tremble. Have you considered adopting a small mutt? They have less health problems, generally intelligent, need homes, and are loving.

Try your local animal shelter first! I got my toy poodle from there.
She's a great dog, and very pretty! Although she looked rough when I got her...she cleaned up really nice. lol
You would be saving a life!
If you cant find what you want there,
try www.petfinder.com

Go to akc.org and reasearch the breeds there to get an idea what breed would be suitable for your lifestyle. There's so much involved in choosing the right breed.
