There are plenty of good books out there about this. One of the best is "Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot". However, here are some very simple things to do to help renew old unused neural pathways and to open new ones.
1. Take up something that you did regularly when you were young that takes thought...musical instruments are particularly helpful. Did you play in a school band? Take that same instrument back up.
2. Start doing simple tasks with your non-dominant hand. Brush your teeth, comb your hair, eat...all with the opposite hand.
3. Crossword puzzles.
4. Learn something new...a language perhaps?

Do a course in memory improvement, or make outrageous and ridiculous associations, in telling a little story to yourself about what it is you want to remember. and really want to remember it very much; write it down and repeat it several times, reviewing next day, week & month.

Do a lot of sudokus- it really helps improve your memory.
Start with the easy level and then progress.
You can play it online or in the newspaper or buy a book.
Good luck!

Exercise your mind by playing memory games. Make a point to take note of things you want to remember, and practice, practice, practice constantly. Keep vigil.......don't give up. Make it a habit to take note of and remember names when you meet a person by repeating their name back to them........"nice to meet you, Jane"...... thinking about it, and associatiating it to something familiar to you. Any mind exercise is good for memory.
