With a recent split, i've been very depressed lately where it doesnt seem like anything goes right, or will go right for me. But lately, my dreams (which I generally remember rather vividly) have all become negative. Not in a nightmare type of way, but situations that turn out negative or upsetting. I've never had dreams affected by moods before and dont know if im starting to go crazy or not! But my dreams are starting cause me to wake up in a bad mood or depressed right off the bat. I've never been able to control what I dream about, so im concerned at how long these could last if my depression continues (which isnt being helped by the dreams). Is there anything I can do to try and change these dreams? The dreams are not involving her, or necessarly relationships, but just whatever the dream may be about just turns out negative.

Hi there,

Dreams are a reflection of our lives, emotions and well being. Since you've been depressed lately, this is being embodied by the negativity in your dreams. Even if they don't have to do with relationships, I'd say they're helping you release your pent up emotions which perhaps you dont show in everyday life. Perhaps you're trying to shake off the depression, but are not able to, or you're repressing your feelings. These would manifest themselves in your dreams, as your subconscious tries to let go of the negativity. Pay attention to your dreams, keep a dream journal, they often hold invaluable glimpses and solutions into life's problems.

In order to let go, you must let yourself grieve first, its only natural and human. By trying to suppress the grief, you build up more negativity. So know that its ok to feel depressed, and its ok to feel bad. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be fine. Take care!

I think it's perfectly reasonable to suppose that your waking depression is influencing your dreams. Dreams, after all, are your subconscious letting out whatever you've got on your mind.

It's possible to learn 'lucid dreaming' - which is where you're aware you're in a dream, and can exert control over what's happening in it. This might be helpful for you as it would allow you to feel more in control, but be aware that the process of learning takes a while and involves focussing on your dreams. Havea look online for more info.

I'd also suggest talking to your doctor - maybe s/he can't do anything about your dreams, but they may be ableto help your waking mood. Equally, make sure you get plenty of exercise and eat well, as these will help your depression to subside.

lol no. that's usually my moods that influence my desires Like, after me and my boyfriend communicate on the telephone, I usually dream approximately him. I dream a pair of lot of issues. If i'm unhappy, I truthfully have a nightmare(which has occurred lots at present...) If i'm satisfied they typically finally end up being approximately unicorns and ponies... yet those are the worst sort of nightmares...
