The brain uses only one type of fuel: sugar, however, you can not eat sugar and expect it to go to the brain. It has to be the right kind of sugar, produced by your metabolism. They are better produced from slow burning carbs, such as whole grains and vegetables.
The best chemical that helps the brain absorb well the nutrients is Omega 3, a fatty acid contained in fish oils. Try to have one spoonful everyday of pharmaceutical grade cod liver oil.
In old days they tasted awful, but now they are even tasty, with mint and other flavors.

The only food for brain cells is glucose, but you can enhance all the functions with a very healthy way of life, right diet, right exercise , enough sleep,... for your age. This means if your system is working right, you will have a better performance of your brain, ( Check cholesterol, irrigation , mood, stress, etc.

Crossword puzzles, suduko, trying to wrap your brain around string or multiple universe theory, taking a class, you get the idea.
Exercise (especially cardio) stimulates the brain too.
Think of the brain like a muscle, use it or lose it.

Protein. Try to make sure, especially at breakfast you are getting a good helping of meat, peanut butter, eggs or something you like that has allot of protein in it. If you're a vegan, go to the health food store and get a protein replacement.
