I'm a clinical hypnotist and this is one of my most popular therapies.
I've had great results with clients losing weight through hypnosis and keeping it off (which is the most important part!).
Weight gain is typically through habit or emotional / mental patterns. Hypnosis is ideally suited to make changes to these patterns and habits and allow you to create new ones that enable you to get rid of weight and keep it off.
Some results I had were 30lbs lost in 30 days. I've had another client who has lost 50lbs in 5 months. A lot of it depends on you and the hypnotist you see.
Always make sure they are accredited by your national hypnotherapists society. You can find recommendations from this society for local hypnotists who can help you. Always spend a bit of time talking to one before you see them to make sure you are comfortable with them.

I did many years ago and it worked for me.
I actually went in for a different reason and asked the hypno-therapist to use weight loss as a test to see if what I was really there for would work.
He taught me a self-hypnosis technique, however, for it to keep working you need to keep practicing.
