Paxil can be very addictive. I dont care what the commercials say.
The absolute worst side effect of Paxil is that it can cause birth defects. If you are planning on becoming pregnant make sure that you ween yourself off first.
Don't trust your doctor to be able to explain all of the side effects associated with any drug. The way healthcare works in our country, we have to educate ourselves on these issues. Most of the information your doctor receives about a particular drug is supplied to him or her by the sales rep of a pharmaceutical compnany. Nowadays many people prescribe their own medication. They see a commercial on TV about a drug that is certain to make their life better and then ask their doctor for that drug. Fifty percent of the time a patient that asks for a specific drug they get a prescription for it.

Sexual side effects, such as a decrease in urges are the most common side effect under all depression medication, also a problem with paxil is that it doesn't always work... you have to keep increasing the doses over time... and it is highly dependent... you can't just quit paxil... you have to be weened off on another medicine...

I have learned that a lot of psychiatrists won't give straightforward answers (not to say that we don't need them). Many times you have to do your own research about the risks of psychiatric meds. I was put on Klonopin a good 13 years ago never knowing that it is one of the most difficult drugs to come off and that a person can actually suffer from withdrawal syndrome for years after coming off.
Are you young enough to consider having children? There are risks associated with pregnancy and SSRI's. I'd look online at places like medhelp.com, ivillage and the like. Collect information and then ask your doctor the questions you would like to have answered. Good luck to you.

You should have received a printout sheet of side affects and warnings with your perscription. If not ask the pharmacy for one.
Bare in mind that most adverse symptoms do not occur to the majority of people taking the drug.
Also, look at it this way; the brain is an organ as is your thyroid, heart, etc. If it is not receiving enough ceritonin (sp), it needs help much like a diabetic needs to take insulin.

My wife used to be on paxil cr. She was quite cool on it, but I did notice that it affected her sex drive. I would rather deal with the insanity than give up all that sex.

If you're already taking it for 3 years I'm sure you would have discussed the possible side effects with your doctor, and if you haven't then just look them up on google.
