Toronto is made up of a number of neighbourhoods such as Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, East York, York & Toronto (City Centre).

The GTA includes Toronto, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Aurora, Stoufville, Newmarket, Bradford, Brampton, Burlington, Mississauga, & Oakville.

If you are looking for a less congested and more affordable suburb, I would recommend Clarington. It is on the far eastern fringe of the GTA, roughly 40 minutes drive outside of Toronto (however it is 10 minutes from the Oshawa Go Train Station which provides easy access to Downtown). Unlike most other Toronto suburbs, you can actually purchase a decent house without breaking the bank here, especially in the community of Bowmanville. Plus there is a small town charm there that you just can't find in any of the other 'faceless' suburbs surrounding Toronto.

If you are looking for upscale, insular living, I recommend Oakville or Burlington. Both have gorgeous waterfront areas (especially Burlington). Crime is also quite low. The biggest downside with these neighbourhoods are the ridiculous housing prices and significant property taxes (which are higher then Toronto believe it or not). The 'keep up with the jones's' mentality is especially strong in these places, which probably doesn't make them an ideal place to raise kids unless you are wealthy.

I DO NOT recommend the suburbs to the immediate north of the city, particularly Richmond Hill, Markham & Vaughan. I've lived in each of these places, and suffice to say, the neighbourhoods have a ethnic clique mentality about them. The same goes for places such as Brampton and parts of Mississauga. Plus, these areas have growing crime rates...

Pickering, Ajax & Whitby are the epitome of 'bedroom communities' both have a plethora of big box stores and overpriced homes in cul-de-sacs, crime is also increasing in these locales.

Oshawa has a bad rap as a redneck city, which isn't entirely accurate, while it does have a blue-collar mentality it is rapidly growing and its economy is diversifying beyond its automotive reputation. In particular, the northern areas of the city is undergoing a significant amount of growth due in part to low-housing costs (due to perception) and the opening of a new university (University of Ontario Institute of Technology)

Aurora is upscale, sort of a pseudo 'Oakville' so to speak, it contains many overpriced homes and large estates but lacks the charm of Oakville. However, if sprawling backyards and expansive homes are what you want, this is the place to be!

Newmarket is ok, although it has a large number of half-way houses and group homes. In my view, the housing prices there are outrageous considering its proximity to Toronto.

I moved downtown from a town that barely shows up on the map about 4 years ago. It's totally grown on me and can't really picture myself leaving. People will tell you that you'll hate Toronto after a while and you don't need a car here. You definitely need a car. My doctor, dentist, pharmacy and favorite fast food are all within a few blocks, clubs are a $5 cab ride away and when you're bored and have nothing to do in the summer you can wander down to the Ex or Ontario Place, hit up some museums or go to a Jay's game for like $12. I think returning to a small town after this I'd be bored senseless.

no no no no no !

Toronto proper includes Toronto, Etobicoke, North York, East York, and Scarborough.

Beyond the official city of Toronto borders, so different Mayors and tax offices, but still in the Greater Toronto Area, includes Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, maybe even include Oshawa.

All that surrounding area, plus Toronto, both those paragraphs, comprise the whole Greater Toronto Area, the "GTA" !

Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughn, Bramption, and Mississauga is the GTA.

It really depends on what you're looking for, but overall, the best area by far I would say is the Markham-Thornhill area. It's truly fantastic. It's very safe, but it does not have as much of the generic, concrete, cookie-cutter suburb look - it has a lot of character. Also, there is a wide selection of houses and house prices to choose from, including condos. Also, it has very easy access to the Toronto Subway (just a short bus or car ride), good public transportation, good schools, and looks very pleasent.
