Ok, I work for a small food retail shop called the CO-OP.
It's coming up to April, and if you don't take your holiday before this time, you lose it!
I requested a holiday 4 weeks in advance (following the rules provided by them) and I was told I probably will not get this holiday and I will lose it. Now, this is my first year at work and had not been informed to make bookings earlier.
So im wondering if my holiday has gone bye bye. I mean it's only a weekends worth of holiday, but well you can't blame anyone for feeling a little hard done by hearing that you will probably lose your holiday...
Any hopes for me, or should I just forget it?

keep requesting your holidays. Note down alternative days to the ones you have requested, perhaps a couple of fridays and mondays to make a long weekend. Tell your supervisor/manager, and each time they give you an excuse, tell them that you have noted their denial for your holiday and give them further dates, when they know you are keeping a track of what you are requesting, perhaps they will get nervous enough to give in and give you the time you have worked for and are entitled to.

It really is up to the company. They will probably tell you that the rles were explained somewhere (smallprint of contract, hidden on a noticeboard somewhere).
In which case yes, possibley you will lose it. Howver it seems a bit harsh. Many firms would let you take a couple of days in the first month of the new year, or in some cases pay you for them.
I suggest you have a chat with your manager, and ask what you can do. If you do it in a sensible, non emotional way, they will probably sort something out for you.

i also work for a small retail shop, Iceland, and i think if I'd had that problem i would go directly to HR department if you are not happy with your bosses decision, after all you still have 6 weeks in which to take your holidays. can you compromise and take them at a different time before April? this is one of food retails quieter months, good luck

If you filed before the deadline, then you could appeal for a later holiday date. I prolly would not bother if I like my job at all.
