First, what country do you live in?!? Not everyone lives in the States, goddammit!...

Take every first left and second right (or whatever..) and wait until you get to a place where you've never been/looks nice and stop there.

Then find yourself a pub and go in there and chat to people for however many days you are staying. When you talk to these people say you believe the opposite to what they believe - i.e. if they are Fine Gael, go Fianna Fáil, if they are republican, go democrat, if they like cheese, hate cheese, etc...

The dog can be a good starting point in the conversation.

What part of the country are you interested in, or is everything on the table? One of the most beautiful rural road trips I've ever taken was to follow the "River Road", the highway that follow the Rio Grande from El Paso to Big Bend National Park. Actually, you take I-20 out of El Paso to the road heading south into the Davis Mountains. Spend the night at Ft. Davis, and take an evening to attend a star-party at the McDonald Observatory. Consider spending the night in the rustic cabins at the Prude Ranch, and go horseback riding at Lajitas stables in Ft. Davis. You'll actually pick up the river road in Presidio. On your way there, stop and explore Marfa. Once in Presidio, you'll feel like you've reached the edge of civilization and are lost in the middle of a barren hellhole. But just down the river road, POW! The scenery rises up unexpectedly! It's one of the top routes for motorcycle enthusiasts. The trip is out of the way to get to, but it's a must see experience for anyone adventurous enough to get out there! Spend some time in Lajitas, just before reaching the Park. It's a little town in the middle of nowhere that's become a millionairre's playground. You may not want to stay there, but you're not too far from the Big Bend Basin lodge at that point. Be sure to make reservations. Big Bend is fantastic! Lots of incredible hiking, the scenery is magnificent, and a forest rises up out of the desert. The mountain air at the lodge is cool, even in August, and evening dinner allows you to watch the vibrant sunsets between two mountain peaks. There are hot springs on the desert floor... it's really a little of everything. Desert, mountain, canyon, forest... Be sure to take your camera!
