Son of Man is an appellation applied to many of the OT prophets as they received their prophesies from God. The gospel writers put these words into Jesus' mouth to stake the claim that Jesus was a prophet on the same level as the OT prophets who came before.

The Son of God appellation was added later when the pagan influence of deifying humans entered into Christianity as a selling point to the pagans.

When He refers to Himself as the Son of Man, He is showing us that He was fully human. When He forgives sins, something only God can do, He shows us He is fully God.

When a person refers to himself as "son of man" he is stating that he has a human nature.

When Jesus refered to Himself as "Son of man", he was speaking of His human nature. When jesus refered to Himself as "Son of God", he was speaking of His divine nature.

Juesus Chris is full God and fully Man.

Because He was both man and Deity......

He took on flesh so that He could bleed and die for us....
But He also had to be Deity (God) in order to live out a perfect, sinless life.
