Yes this is a strong pain killing medication, and yes, like ALL medication individuals can suffer from side effects. These are clearly stated on the information leaflet which would have come with the medication. You would have been advised on the leaflet that if you suffer from these to consult your doctor.

If this is a short treatment to provide you with pain relief over a period of days or weeks (e.g. post-operative pain) and you are suffering from side effects there may be alternatives that would suit you better which might not leave you with side effects.

If this has been proscribed by your doctor as part of a pain management regimen then you will need to speak to them to either change the dose, which may improve the systems, or put you on an alternative. I'm presuming from the dose that this is dihydracodiene continous, which is a sustained release drug. Maybe putting you on the standard release treatment would work better for you.

If you are worried about side effects, or after some of the posts on here, about becoming addicted to this medication (not everyone does or it would have been taken off the market a long time ago), then speak to your G.P. / PCP. If you are still not happy asked to be referred to a pain clinic, most large hospitals have one these days, and the doctors there specialise in treating chronic pain, and working out a pain management system with you.

yes, I've taken the same medication and there are quite a few potential side-effects. I suffered from light headedness, giddy as well as a sore over-dry throat.

Get in touch with your GP if your symptoms seem more than trivial. Pharmacists will always give free advice about drugs and side effects too, so you could always pop round. Check with them also, to check that you have the correct dose level, as there are smaller dose tablets. If in doubt, visit your GP. Unusual or odd side-effects could mean either something minor or major. It's important to be treated appropriately.

Good luck! Rob

it is an opiate just like Vicodin and Heroin.
If you use them over a week in a row, they make your opiate receptors screaming for more and you will be very uncomfortable with flu like symptoms and depression.
Watch out for any opiate based drug. You can only take them for 14 days and even then it will be a bit hard to not take them the next day. After unknowingly becoming addicted and fighting through pure hell, I got my life back , but it all started from taking them just a few days too much. I say to take them for just 3 days or dont take them and buck up and take the pain,
It doesnt work as well at all, but the only other thing to take is Ibuprophen or Aleve.

Possible alternative in time... Muscles can have knots (trigger points) that make them tight which in turn put pressure on nerves and other things causing pain.
Molasses - a couple of swigs or Bananas 1 or 2 - both contain magnesium and potassium for muscles.
Try working with the principles taught in The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
I use a chiropractor and massage therapist with it

DHC is the next down in strength from Morphine and so is one of the strongest painkillers prescribed in the UK, it is also a commonly abused drug. You do not state what side effects you have had, and remember that ALL drugs have some side effects, ranging from mild to severe.

When I was taking them I had a bit of dizziness & nausea, felt a bit of a buzz to be honest but that settles down when your body gets used to them-they are a strong, effective painkiller for a lot of things and are basically just codeine which is usually non-addictive with few side effects.

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects. But they make me feel alittle'spaced out' and I get a dry mouth.
Be warned that you can become addicted to these tablets!

dihydracodiene contains codine witch comes from the opium poppy, there for it is highly addictive, normally they are prescribed as a pain killer for medium pain.
some people take them just for the buzz as the side effects are drowsiness and lack of coordination
