I have recently been to the gp and he prescribed me with proxac as I have been suffering with depression for 10 years. i have been resistant to taking any medication and have tried all kins of remedies such as St Johns Wort, Bach remedy, aromatherapy, vitamins etc. but I ththought I would give prozac a go..I was not prpared for the bad feelings that came with it!!!I felt positively suicidal...is this normal? I stopped taking the meds, went back to doctor, and she said for me to keep taking them. I haven't because I am scared of the effects. Now I am left with a very dark, uneasy feeling inside, and I don't know what to do about it...Has anyone else suffered with this? and can anyone suggest anything that may help?

prozac does have a black box warning about suicidal feelings. it's not an abnormal side effect.

the best thing to do, is to see a psychiatrist on a regular basis so that you can get a handel on the underlying condition the anti-depressants are treating, though I also think switching to another anti-depresant is in order. ask youor doctor about lexapro or celexa.

Hello and I am very sorry your facing these emotions. I on the other hand have anxiety issues and since I became disabled perhaps a little depressed because I am alone 99% of the time. Regardless Doctors tried me on a range of medications. Impramine, Prozac, lorazapam etc, etc. All of those made me want to freak out. Even to the point of not being myself

You were wise to quit something that makes you want to harm yourself or others. I know life is hard enough as it is. Have you tried something like Niacin tablets. Say in about 50mg form. That will give you a little pick-me-up. Another item I found helpful for those blahs days is soy protein shakes. Don't laugh till you try them. I got on a soy protein shake regime and oh my did I feel great and a little perky. Then there is Ginseng. Some like its little picker upper side effects.

Good luck with that. Just don't be too down on yourself, a lot of souls out there like you struggle with bi polar symptoms.

Yes, I have. And I refused to take it. I had nightmares, I was more nervous than when I began taking it, I too felt suicidal. I do not believe it is a 'normal' side effect. Much research has been done and many experts agree that if you have this symptom you should not be taking it. Having exhausted all other natural remedies (have you ever tried 5-HTP), you should ask you gp for a newer SSRI as they do not have the severity of side effects that Prozac has. (i.e.Lexapro and many other newer forms). I wish you good health, but do not take this one again. Horrible. Sorry you're suffering from depression and I believe one day you won't have to.

I had similar side effects with Prozac. Tell your doctor that you are not comfortable with continuing to take the medication because of the side effects and ask if they can prescribe something else. Maybe try seeing a different GP at the same surgery.

Just remember that medications can have different effects on different people (especially psych. meds). I have been taking Prozac for over 12 years now, and as much as I don't like admitting it, it has helped immensely! But I do know people who have had bad effects from it too (quick temper, emotional numbness, etc.). I've tried other medications as well, and have not been happy with the side effects. My advice would be to try different ones out until you find one that works for you. Best of luck!

Prozac makes you more depressed for the first 2 weeks but after that you might feel better. it's like hitting the bottom at the end of 2 weeks. but after that you'll start to feel better....
