I had 4 sinus infections in October, November, & December. Each time I went to an internal medicine doctor. I was given penicillin for the infection and took antihistamine tablets. The infections went away, but my sinuses were still bad. In January, I went to an allergist to make sure I wasn't allergic to something. I had an allergy test on my back and on my arm. I'm not allergic to anything. I had a cat scan on my head. The allergist showed me on my xray that the sinus cavities behind my nose are 3/4 filled with fluid. She said I have sinusitis. I was given a prescription & nasil spray. Three weeks later, I went to the allergist for a follow up and my sinuses were still bad. She gave me a second nasil spray & told me if it doesn't work, come back again for a follow up. She said that maybe I should see an ear nose and throat doctor. Is that the type of doctor I should see next? Should I go back to the allergist for a follow up? What type of doctor should I go to for sinusitis?

Yes, an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) Doctor is the answer for you. I hope you have a good HMO. You'll more than likely have to get a referral, but if you're lucky (depending on your medical plan) you can contact them directly. Most Insurance companies require you to get a referral from your IM Physician though.
Isn't it sad that we've allowed the almighty dollar to control so much as it relates to health care. I used to be a pharmaceutical sales rep, and was always saddened by the way a persons HMO controls what type of care they receive. How sad.
Anyway- yes, see an ENT- most specialists are specialists for a reason- they are good. Your Allergist however has been 'herded' by the drug companies and the HMO's to just keep trying different drugs and minimize expensive treatments. After the CAT scan, she should have referred you to an ENT. Sinus cavities filled with fluid are not the forte' of an Allergist- that's ENT territory. Good luck, and get well soon!

You should see an ENT - Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. A chronic condition will not be cured by taking penicillin and sprays. There is likely an underlying condition causing the flare-ups of sinusitis, such as a cyst in a sinus. The ENT specialist will be able to establish the cause of your chronic sinusitis, and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Ear Nose Throat Specialist. Allergists and Sinus Specialists(yes, they exist) are usually helpful depending on the reason behind/type of sinus problems you're having.

Eye, ear, nose and throat doctor.
I have the same and take Singulaire daily and use Astelin as preventives. Once you can get rid of this outbreak, you need to go on a preventative regimen to control future attacks.
I had a three month episode when I lived in Georgia. What a drag. I had cortisone shots, prednisone and antibiotics before I got any relief. Good luck.

ENT - Ear, Nose, Throat specialist. I went through the same thing you're mentioning for 2 years, and finally had the surgery. Recovery was hell.
