Should be banned because:
1) unlike other potential nasties people can harm you without your consent (passive smoking) and because smoking is legal there is nothing you can do about it!
2) Smoking undeniably causes illness through damage to lungs, tissues, circulation etc and this damage is generally irreparable, usually requiring long term expensive medical care. The medical services place a huge burden on the general society which could be better used in treating and or researching illnesses and diseases that are not self inflicted.
3) Nicotine is undeniably addictive so like illegal drugs you are hooked very quickly and locked into a life of scrungy, dirty, disease ridden life of cigarette usage.
So why isnt this stuff banned?
One of the problems has been the financial clout of the tobacco companies and their often coersive influence over those responsible for public health and safety. That influence is gradually diminishing in part due to court cases, proven harmful effects, and diminishing sales but they are not going to go quietly they are doing all they can to addict as many young people as possible so as to achieve (because of the adictive nature) a virtually guaranteed long term clientelle. I think that its about time the stuff was treated like an ilicit drug.
With all the concern over greenhouses gases and pollution why dont we start with cigarettes after all they must be a fair bit of pollution from all that unecessary smoke!

Because there are too many people out threre already selling marijuana and the government would have a hell of a time trying to take over the profits of it so, until they can find a way to do so, they'll keep it illegal for anyone else to sell, or even use. If tobacco wasnt funding so many political campaigns the government would probably make things harder for them too. If alcohol and tobacco are legal, it makes no sense for marijuana not to be legal. It could be regulated just as the other two are, the government could make money off of writing tickets for using it while driving or whatever, and people could smoke it without worrying about the cops stealing their stash...

Marijuana is not legal because your generation (and mine) has not got off their butts and effected change, you just accept whatever the government feeds you.
Cigarattes are bad, for sure...but, nobody beats their wife under the influence of nicotine-nobody kills a whole family driving under the influence of nicotine. See where I'm going? What do you want to outlaw next? Do you really want to live in a Nanny State? All those questions are up to you, bub, I'm too old to make a difference. Think before you decide something stupid.

if you use the weed thing to ban smoking or nicotine use ,then that will open the whole can of worms on alcohol being outlawed ,, ok, the pot smokers are relaxed and cool with sitting at home and burning one , but you take away the cigarettes , and alcohol , you are going to have over half this country pitching a fit , and road rage will become an epidemic , the country will go nuts with no nicotine, and no alcohol , and the pot smokers will trip on everyone going nuts ..so the banning of nicotine which leads to banning alcohol the only logical benefits to doing this would be for a source of entertainment to the pot smokers because they are going to trip out like a mutha on everyone else going nuts

I disagree. I don't believe government should get involved. It's bad enough they are already telling adults to wear helmets, seatbelts, etc. As long as the person is a legal adult, it should be none of the government's business. They are barely able to appropriatly run the country, let alone my life and personal choices.
