Make sure that they believe 100% in the Bible (that it has no errors).
Make sure that they believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Find a church that does expository preaching (teaches the Bible).
I used to belong to very large church (broadcast on TV). They seemed so distant to me.
Now, I belong to a small church and we are all like family. We really get involved with one anothers trials and joy. We help one another when needed and we have church duties. We really love each other like family and for some of us, we are closer to each other than our own family members.
If the closeness is important to you, then you should find a smaller church. They will have more time for you.
The most important thing that you must do is to put your faith in God, not in the church or pastor.
I am not putting Jed down, but I have to say, my pastor and his wife were quick to tell my family and me that they are sinners and imperfect. No--they don't party and such, but we all sin everyday. Pastors and their wives are no different. My pastor and his wife shared many stories about themselves with us. We don't all go into details about every sin (as some are between you and God only), but it is important to let others know that you are not perfect.

You should look for a Church that teaches the truth of the Bible and you should follow or adjust your thinking to remove any miss-conceptions that you have already formed. For example Use these scriptures to determine what is the truth ?
Mathew 6:9,10+Daniel 2:44+Revelation 21:3,4+Mathew 5:5+Psalms 37:9-11,29+2 Tim 3:16+ 1 Tim 4:15 + Psalms 83:18

I would recommend trying your local Orthodox church. Orthodoxy is the very first christian church after Christ. It has been worshiping in the same manner for 2000 years. The Bible and apostolic teachings are a priority. The priests (are allowed to marry) are very strong and committed to their faiths. Most people think of Orthodox as greek or russian but it is spread throughout the world.

Don't bring up your past if you can help it.
Look for a solid teaching ministry, members that have been there a long time, and programs of actual work they do that helps people out.
Reasons, 1-people do tend to judge.2-if the theology is straight, you will learn the correct things.3-old members mean they are established.4-this shows faith in action...it isn't a dead church where people say but don't do.

Above all you need a church that believes and teaches the whole word of God.
Every church is different, but I would suggest that you try some Pentecostal or Apostolic churches.

Canada is a fairly socialist u . s .. (no longer that socialist compared to those in Scandinavia, yet honestly more beneficial so than u . s . of america.) area of our taxes bypass in route of our dissimilar social courses applied into society for the more beneficial solid of the country. those facilities contain (yet are not any further constrained to) practise, healthcare, welfare, pension, jails, homeless shelters etc. it might properly be argued that the authorities does no longer do to boot of a interest because it is going to so there are charities and church homes that furnish different facilities for those needy people suggested above.

Friend the first thing you want to look for is the truth of God's word, & see if they are teaching it, & if they are, then evrything else will fall into place, & if they are not, then it won't take you long to leave.
