I really want, and have wanted for some time, to be part of some sort of religion, to have a faith.
I've attended all the local churches and felt nothing but a fraid.
I've experienced various religions, attended ceremonies to observe and everything but I feel nothing.
Am I trying too hard?
Why is it that I feel I WANT a faith/religion when I just don't seem to be capable?
I'm very scientific and mathmatically minded - am I the wrong type of person to be religious? Do I need too much proof?
Maybe I should simply give up.

Could I respectfully suggest that you will not find God in religion, you need to seek God on your own, if I might explain...

God desires a personal one to one relationship with you irrespective of which Church you choose to attend, this relationship is only realised when we come to the conclusion that we are separated from God, something which it appears you know, hence your desire for 'faith' when we realise we are separated from God we need to follow the path set down by God Himself which is simply come before Him in prayer, admit that you have done things that are wrong (the Bible calls this sin, and it is this sin which separates us from God). Ask God to forgive you. Ask Him to save you, and as God says in John 6:37 He will turn no one away, it doesn't matter whether you have a scientific mind or not.

Please do not give up, God tells us to ask and keep on asking, seek and keep on seeking, He will answer and if you seek God with an earnest heart you WILL find Him.

If you want to know more or ask more questions then feel free to post it underneath your question and we will make contact, I would be glad to help in anyway I can.

NO, why would you give up? If u give up it means ur wasting ur whole life. Thats not how it works.

first of all.. let me tell u.. question ur reason of birth. Why were u brought to this world? What is the purpose of ur life? try to get answers to that first. then do a research that which religion answers most of all ur questions. It is a known fact that all the books revealed so far have been changed or edited, But Quran is the only Holy book which has never been changed since the last 1400 years. So I am not telling u to adopt Islam as your religion. Just try to read the Quran.

When Michael Jackson was in jail he was very perturbed of the recent happenings disturbing him. And at that time his brother who is a Muslim revert told him about the Quran. and his brother gave a copy of quran to michael. Though michael was still a christian then, but he enjoyed reading the Quran so much that he too then started havin thoughts of reverting to Islam. He found eternal peace while reading it.

So my advice to you is that atleast give it a try. Just reading the Quran wont make u a muslim. So there is nothin to be scared of.
Just read the quran as if its a message from the lord up above. Dont read and understand it as if its a terrorist manual. Nothing like it. Just make sure u read it with the context. Dont just open it from the middle an start reading it. No, start from the beginning.

The scientists today are discovering new theories because they have been reading and understandin the Quran. Thats the place where they get their ideas from. So give it a try.

Get yourself a copy of Quran an trust me you are going to feel the difference. And if you dont then give it some time to grow on you. Reading it without understanding wont do u no good. Just understand the content. Dont try to finish the chapters quickly as possible. No, that wont help. Just try to absorb the material.

Take care
And I pray to Allah that He helps you in every way possible.

Do remember the choice is yours :)
You have a right to choose. Allah doesnt force his decisions on you. You are the one who has to choose. So be careful what you choose. Allah is the greatest forgiver. May Allah be with you.

Peace

Don't give up. For scientific and mathematically minded people but religiously inclined there is institute called as Bhaktivedanta Institute which syntheses science and religion.

"Synthesis of Science and Religion" was the conference held in Bombay, Science City in Calcutta and California organised by
His Holiness Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swmi, a disciple of
Srila Prbhupada (ISKCON founder). Srila Prbhupada also founded Bhaktivedanta Institure to discuss with scientists.

Many of the scientists and nobel laurets were invited along with religionists for these conferences and were many discussions.
There are many books available from these conferences.

You will find some of the books which will enrich you, like,
Essays on Science and Religion
Seven Nobel Laureates on Science and Spirituality
Savijnanam: Scientific Exploration for a Spiritual Paradigm etc...

See this for more details.

Hi,dont be hard on urself,
their is nothing called "the wrong type of person to be religious"
Faith is something naturaly found inside every human,we r born with it,and ur search for a faith is the proof that its in u,but u need to find it.
the comunity in which we r raised is responsible for promoting or not the faith in us.
anyway, its a good start, and i think u should read more from a TRUSTED source about all religions sent by GOD,which is Jewish,Christianity & Islam.
read the all three books, and decide urself which one u think is more logical and truthfull .
And dont give up,cause its u who will lose or win in the end,u have to know that after this life, their is a judgment day, where all humans will be held accountable for what they did during their lifes in front of GOD the creator of the world.
In this day, whoever did good in his life and beleived in GOD and his messengers & books will be a winner,
So its for ur own good to find the right way in life so u dont regret it after .
And also knowing GOD is the most peacfull feeling in the world,u always feel that u r backed with the ultimate power in the world.
Try to read specialy the QORAN which is the Muslim holy book, its the only preserved words of GOD left on earth in its original script.
Good luck man:)

Well, I felt like you but luckily I had some slight guidance as my mother is Catholic. I started attending Catholic RCIA classes last year which were held once a week. I went with an open mind, knowing I won't agree with everything and even though I wasn't too thrilled with the first few classes I kept going because I quite liked the idea of a lot of other things, especially once i learned not to take everything so seriously as a lot of things are about symbolism. Anyway, knowing that I don't have to keep going I did and even got baptised at Easter. I'm not saying that catholicism is ehat you're looking for but I am trying to say that going to Church isn't enough as you need to learn the background and have more in-depth discussions. I am sure other religions also have classes, maybe you can contact your local church to ask about these.

Good luck in finding what you are looking for.

Make up your own religion or dont find a religion but something that you beleive in. I am not religious at all and dont really want to be coz religion causes a lot of problems, there is no proof of any gods or anything really ( can you really imagine some god somewhere controlling everything that happens?? - I think I would believe in ghosts or aliens before a god) also I think religion was a way of recruiting people in the past - religious leaders or people high in th church were powerful and the more people they got to follow the religion the more powerful they were. I know not everyone thinks that but I think religion is a way to make people feel they belong somewhere or have some purpose. I think people who are mega religious are actualy a bit crazy - like on the borat movie and he visits the church.

Sweetie, if you're going in with an expectation then you're there concentrating on trying to feel something special instead of simply allowing yourself to believe and trust in the faith. It has to be natural.
Maybe you should ask yourself WHY you want to have a religion so badly? Possibly the problem lies there...

The thing about going to many different places is that there are many contradictions between religions, and even within the religion itself, and being analytical just brings to light the contradictions and the "fraud"s.
I am not saying that being analytical will stop you from being happily spiritual, it's just sometimes, you need to just believe.

Keep going to the different places of worship, but now go with an open mind, not one to contradict nor analyse. (God cannot be proven, God is simply there once you believe) When you find the one that finds you, when you feel "touched" and you believe, then you know that you've found a religion...

Good Luck

"I'm very scientific and mathmatically minded - am I the wrong type of person to be religious?"

There is no "wrong type" of person to be religious. It sounds like you are like I was for most of my adult life. Before I became a Christian I told some people that I was an agnostic because you couldn't prove that God didn't exist and you couldn't prove that He did exist. I felt that there probably was a God because science couldn't answer my questions about how matter came into existence since it didn't make any sense that matter has just always been here without a cause for it being here.

Are you trying too hard?

I would guess that you are trying in the wrong way. You are seeking to find God through other people instead of going directly to the source through Jesus Christ. So what's the answer?

There is no "one answer fits all" answers to that question. Some people say that you should start praying to God to reveal Himself to you. Be honest and pray and say something like "God I don't even know if you exist or not but I want to know so if you are really out there then please reveal yourself to me".

Then start reading the Bible and continue to pray even if your prayers go something like this "I feel foolish talking to myself but I'm praying because I want to believe in You so please if you are there give me faith to believe".

You might find some of the proofs that will help you on the Free Stuff page @ http://web.express56.com/~bromar

I'm very scientifically minded too, I like evidence, proof, order and logic. I never thought I'd believe anything, never understood the whole religion thing.

Then it hit me. I stumbled across a copy of the Tao Te Ching, and I was amazed - this book summed up everything I felt about life.

I'd advise you to keep looking - even if you don't find your faith, you'll learn a lot and gain so much on the journey.

I believe there is a faith out there for everyone, so keep looking - don't forget about the more eastern religions and the smaller religions too. Keep doing what you are doing, if you are like me, one day it'll just hit you!

Best wishes :)

Firstly calm down girl you are taking this too harshly and pressurising your self way too much,so take a deep breath and read...
First of all do not give up because God never gives up on you.Remember even at your darkest times when you have no one to turn to you can always turn to him. Okay firstly the thing is none of what I say will appeal to you if you dont believe in him.So even if you dont it doesnt matter just read on you seem to be in desperate search of him and thats what he loves the most.
You say you want a miracle, why not you stop waiting for them and actually be the miracle your self? Seeing is not believing ,believe and then you will see.I know lol im speaking like im some wise old man but you will be surprised if you know my age,and NO im not trying to convert you or anything of the sort but just trying to help you find your way.
You say you are loosing faith, dont; because you cant, look at your own self and ask did all of this happen by chance.Did actual 'evolution' bring to me where I am when even scientist them selves cannot prove it but give us various complicated explanations which we just nod our heads to,is'nt this why it is still called Darwin's 'THEORY' instead of fact.
You are not the wrong type of person to be religious, actually no one is. In Islam it is known that even a local Prostitute was admitted into Heaven just by giving a dog a drink of water.Religion has been split to so many fractions(Judism-71 Chritianity-72 Islam-73) that people make it so complicated that one does not know what to pursue and is easily misled.
All you have to have is faith, and achieving ii is no where near difficult.Believe or even try and you will see miracles coming your way.
If you need more help which I have so much to give but don't want to mention here just give me your e-mail and ill be happy to help you anytime.Hehe this can be done by picking this answer as the best answer and in your comment type your email..(No its not a scheme to get this answer to be the best because what is the value of gaining 10 points when I can help a someone in need :)
Hope this helped you...

perhaps you will find what you are looking for in a religion that is not faith based. study everything that has any feeling for you, small religions, philosophy, art, you never know where you will end up, but you will find what you are looking for.

i studied eastern religion, especially taoism, after finally giving up on my parents christianity, because i just couldn't make myself feel it, ya know?

after i had kids, i found the structure and community from christianity that i liked as child and the action based common sense approach of taoism in reform judaism. i really only started the official conversion process to save my kids from being harassed and picked up by the church bus! it came to mean so much more to me. now i consider myself more of a humanist/reconstructionist jew. oddly, the very orthodox jewish that got me interested in this religion in the first place seems to have the same faults that i found in christianity when i started my journey to find what would work for me.

you want religion because it is something that is missing for you. what you are incapable of is pretending that somebody else know what is right for you just because it is right for them. that, in and of itself, makes you a very spiritual person according to many faiths.
