hes been doing good the past 3 days though & big improvement but yesterday he woke up from a nap & we were just sitting on the couch while he woke up & seconds later he went into a crying fit, arching his back, screaming, shaking, we couldnt even hold him we had to let him just flip out!! he did this for a few minutes!! then i just grabbed him & his dad put the tv on & a couple 2-3 mins later he concentrated on the tv in my lap but he was out of it more or so tired from his fit! he never turned blue, his eyes werent rolling around breathing was fine B4 (even though like i said earlier he had just went through horrible wheezing & labored breathing for 2-3 days before this). what could have caused this? someone told me maybe he had a slight acid reflux & thats what was hurtung him. hes never had it before so is this possible? if not what could it have been? it came out of nowhere & went away and he was fine afterwards but again it was scary!! so i know it wasnt a normal tantrum 4 sure!

Sounds like my daughter. She had a few bad colds where she became asthmatic too. The doctor finally decided that she had asthma (I think they were just due to the colds...) but she's on singulair now and they gave us a breathing machine for home for if/when she has another attack.

OK a few questions here - was he to the Dr and ER for the cold and breathing or for the fits? Has he had a fit like this before?
Was he running a fever when he had the fit?

Since he is 20 months, colic is unlikely and the eye rolling and "out of it" after the fit makes me think seizure.

Assuming the following: The Dr and ER visits were for the cold/asthma and he has NOT had a fit like this before and he DID have a fever - he could have had a febrile seizure. That is a non-epilepsy seizure caused by the fever that usually does not carry into childhood or adulthood. DO see your doctor as soon as possible to confirm this.

Definition from MedicineNet.com -http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=6485

Febrile seizure: A convulsion that occurs in association with a rapid increase in body temperature. Febrile seizures are common in infants and young children and, fortunately, are usually of no lasting importance.

Is he taking anything regularly for the asthma? If he is taking
Albuterol, AccuNeb or Venolin he MAY have had a reaction (seizure or severe shaking) from the meds. Call you DR ASAP and explain the situation.

Got this from Medicine.net
http://www.medicinenet.com/albuterol_pediatric-inhalation_pre-mixed_solution/article.htm
SIDE EFFECTS of AccuNeb (pediatric Albuterol): Nervousness, shakiness, headache, stomach pain or dry throat may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: tremor, trouble sleeping, muscle cramps, coughing. TELL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: unusually fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, blurred vision, seizures.

Take care.

Acid reflux and colic can both cause these syptoms. But so can many other problems. With the symptoms you described it may not be related to the cold/asthma issue at all. The best thing to do is get an appointment with your regular pediatrician. As only he can determine and follow through with the proper tests to decide. The ER is great in an emergency, but peditricians are better because they specialize and can usually get you in the same day (or within a few days) if there is a problem. Good luck and I hope the baby gets better soon.

I am raising a granddaughter that was born early and she too has asthma attacks. Do you have a nebulizer? If not then you need to get one. We have one and every time she even starts to get a cold we start giving her the treatments. I can only guess what caused your son to flip out. I would say that it was probably that maybe he was having trouble with his nose. Babies do not know how to breath through their mouths and if there is dried mucus in the nose that hampers the ability to take a full breath, sometimes they will freak out and feel like they cannot breath.

Ask the doctor to give you a nebulzer and a prescription for Palmacort and albuteral. We are having to give our little one sometimes 6 treatments a day.

Good Luck and I hope he feels better soon.

I think for your peace of mind, that you might want to take him to the doctor. It has been shown that doctors are finding the symptoms of autism as early as two years old, and since he is hitting that age, you might want to suggest to your doctor some of the things you see. The only two that seem to concern me, is his organization of his crayons and word cards (do you see a particular pattern that he should not quite understand at this age?) As far as him playing alone, children are not truly social until the age of three or so. Toddlers often play better and actually prefer to play alone, so that is not unusual. As for his eating habits, it is not uncommon for autistic children to only like certain meals, ad this can sometimes present as what looks like an aversion to foods, but since your son is so young and IF he had autism, when you finally lucked up and served what he wanted, you would see him eat it, and you would find that it would be one of a few "preferred meals" that you served. Right now, I might go ahead and mention what you saw to the doctor, who if he is concerned, will proceed to study your child and test him for the condition. Blessings to you and your little one....

you should take him to the DR. He may have had a seizure. If it is asthma, he needs to be checked out so he can have the proper medication to control it.
