You bring up a good question. The budshoot is the first race of the season for non-points. The Daytona 500 is the first points race of the season. So, in reality they are both first races.

The Bud Shot out is more like the dunk contest at the NBA All star basketball game it's just a lot of fun as to where Daytona is the first points race and the biggest race/win of the year

The bud shoot out is the first race but Daytona 500 is the first actual season race because that's when they start earning points for the season

The Bud Shootout is a preview race of what is to come in the upcoming season. It is a non-points event which is 70 laps. 21 participate, 15 of which are Bud pole winners from the previous season and the remaining drivers are past shootout winners. Daytona is considered the first race of the season because it is the first "for points" events that affects the standings.
