How do i stop cells in excel from changing 4/4 to 04-Apr when i don't want it autoformatted?

simply enter ' before 4/4 and excel will ignore ' symbol and will display the value as 4/4

You have to change the format of the cell to text.

right click on the cell
format cells
go to "number" tag
choose "date" in category
then customize the settings you want
