My 8 year old has started to we think sleep walk
last night he was up 2 hours after he was put too bed ,he wandered round the hall then into the living room sat on my knee sort of cried or mumbled walked out and went back to bed when i checked he was in his bed he opened his eyes said he was cold and asked for his hot water bottle .we've seen him do this a few times when he's got up to go toilet and went back to bed ,so far these things have happened while we were still up and not sleeping .My sister used to sleep walk when she was younger and could have full conversations go back to bed and not remember in the morning,When i asked him this morning did he remember being up he thought i was joking and wanted to know every thing he did should i be worried or just keep putting him back to bed undisturbed ?

My son sleep walks, he's 2. I asked his pediatrician about it and was told that it is hereditary, and most likely he will grow out of it himself with out any help. Just lead him back to bed with out waking him. If he is getting hurt when doing it, you should probably talk to his doctor on advice.

No, it should pass. Some times as kids grow up there is a part of there brain that is still working out that they are asleep and it makes them get up and talk and walk around people.

He should be OK after while, If it keeps up then I would contact a doctor as it may have to do with stress or a comical imbalance. Nothing to bad just something that needs to be looked into.

I don't think it is that unusual, but I do think it can be dangerous. Maybe it would be well advised to put up some door bells or some other form of alarm system in case he gets a notion to walk out of the house while he is having his nocturnal wanderings. I would also speak to his pediatrician to see if anything can be done to curb this.

just lead him back to bed without waking him, maybe set up some sort of alarm system to wake you up in the night if he starts doing it (a bell attached to the top of his door ?) whilst you're asleep. i used to sleepwalk-i would make come all the way downstairs,go into the tool cupboard in the kitchen, all the way back upstairs then start banging holes out of either the airing cupboard or toilet with a hammer!! (apparently i have ambitions of being a plumber??).I grew out of it aged about 19?

What does your GP suggest? I would go along with that.

Research it on line the NHS may even have some info on it up on-line. Get a book from the library.

There are lots of things you could investigate yourself to put your mind at rest, you may get a good answer on here you may get bad recommendations - are you going to believe them.

I would satisfy your own concerns and chat to a professional about it.

my niece used to get what is called "sleep terrors". it was so scary. it seemed to happened when she was over tired. she would walk, and just be over all terrified, and yes, scream. my sister used to sit with her, try to comfort her. she tried to make sure she felt safe, and got enough sleep.
it did pass.
the answer that recommended you seek information other than here is good advice. you need to be educated, and comfortable to handle this the best way for you both.
good luck

Sleep walking is hereditary. If your sister out grew it so will your son.
