Hi, for the past 7 months I have been getting taxed quite a lot on the tax code BRM1. I assumed it was emergency tax, but it has been the same now for too long. I was wondering if anyone knew what this tax code meant, and if anyone knew of a way I could somehow get the tax back? First serious job out of university so dont know a lot about this sort of thing.

Thanks

BR means Basic Rate so you are getting tax taken out without the benefit of the Personal Allowance. M1 means that you get taxed each pay period as if you are going to earn that money all year, ie, it does not calculate your tax cumulatively. this has the effect of taking out too much tax if you get paid overtime or a bonus in one pay period but not the next.

Did you sign a form P46 when you started your present job? What did you put on it? Have you had any part-time jobs since April 6th? Call the tax office that deals with the PAYE scheme for your employer (if your schedule allows, go to a walk-in centre - they don't bite, honest!)

Frankly, the only way this is going to resolve itself is if you take the initiative. HMRC have too many problems dealing with the new PAYE rules for pensioners to pro-actively deal with this.

You are self employed and do not understand the tax you are charging yourself. Ohh I see - you also have a job. Did you fill in a P46 when you started that job? BR X means no allowances. That leaves your allowances for the self-employed thing. But taking allowances now means less tax now and a higher bill later. Choices choices - you get to use the allowances once, with the job or with the self employment. If with the job ask for a P46, fill it in and tick box A for next year.
