I have 2 6 month old kittens and they have been looking out the window forlornly. I have let them out a couple of times (only for 10 minutes with my supervision) but I would like to start letting them out more. I don't have a cat flap and I am at work all day. Is it safe to let them out all day and let them back in when I get home - therefore getting rid of the litter tray? If I get them used to this method will they need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night? so many questions.....!

Maybe leave them out a little bit longer with your supervision. They are still a bit young to leave them on their own. I leave my cat out all day when we are at work. He does prefer to go out. You can't leave your animals locked up all day, its no good for them. I know there are dangers but do we humans stay locked up all day in case we get run over by a car!!

Well you can let them out. BUT in today's day and age it really comes down to where you live. In the city, they would most likely get run over. This can happen anywhere, but more of a chance in the city. They don't know cars so don't know the danger. If there are other cats you can expect cat fights. If you don't have them spade and they are female you can expect more kittens. Then there are other things like wild animals, foxes, whatever there are where you are at. They are looking out the window as something has caught their attention. LIKE a bird, or squirrel or maybe a rabbit. But they will survive in the house so much better than outside. YES, I know there are many cats that go outside, BUT I myself keep all four of mine in the house 24 / 7

Remember when you let the cats out, the environment that's out there should be thoroughly investigated. Cats normally travel a wide area when they are outside so you have to take into consideration what elements they will be traveling in and whom they will encounter. On the other hand if they only know supervised visitation out side that's all they will expect when I was little I have some funny pictures of me walking my Grandmas cat on a leash but that cat walked on a leash

Why do you think they want to be outside? Sure, they'll look out the windows but that's not saying they'd like to run the dangers of cars, dogs, other cats, fleas, ticks, kids, cold (I live in Minnesota), etc. They're much safer kept inside. Typically they'll be healthier and live longer if they are kept as indoor cats.

If you're going to let them out on their own, give them a little more time. Let them get to be 9 or 10 months (adult sized and girthed).

I don't think its a good idea to leave your kittens outdoors for such a long time, what if the weather gets bad and they have nowhere to shelter. If they don't have a litter tray available when outdoors then they will start using your neighbours gardens as their toilets.

DO NOT leave your animals outside by themselves. There are too many things that could happen to them. They could get run over by a car, mangled by some other animals, or be used in some sick ritual. Give them something to mimmick their outside activites, like one of those climbing poles. They also love boxes. Cats that live indoors live longer lives.

1. Outdoor cats can get hit by cars, attacked by other animals, contract diseases and parasites, can get stolen or killed by cruel people.
2. You would still need a litter box either way
