My engagement ring is a soliatre, and I've never had any trouble with it. Like other answeres have said, a diamond is the hardest substance on earth, the stone will not crack. You might be worried about the head of the stone bending, but the prongs that hold the stone in the ring are usuallyplatinum, so they're not as soft as white gold.
One thing you MAY want to look at is the number of prongs holding in the stone - most have 6 prongs, but some have 4. If it's a 4-prong setting, you may want to consider changing it to a 6 prong setting. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes prongs get broken. It can happen to ANY ring - solitaire or not. Again, this is not a common occurrence at all, but having the 2 extra prongs can help secure the stone from getting lost if it should - think of it as a little extra insurance.
With that said, a solitaire is a beautiful, simple classic piece jewelry - if that's what you want - go for it!!
Best of luck!!

No, it is not easy to break.
I have a solitaire engagement ring and have no problems with it. Mine is a white gold band with a platinum setting (6 prongs). I wear it all the time...even doing dishes, cooking, camping, swimming, bathing. I do take it off when I'm doing heavy/dirty cleaning (like cleaning my chocolate fountain) because I don't want the dirt to be stuck under the diamond. But this would be the same no matter what ring I had.
As far as getting stuck on clothes or hitting plates, etc, any ring will do that. The diamond/platinum will not be compromised because of it.
Best of luck, and congratulations

Buy the ring that you are set on. All rings get caught on things and bump things. Diamonds are so hard that they are not going to break. Usually engagement rings are covered in homeowners insurance, or you could get it insured another way. The insurance should replace the diamond if it comes out of the setting during normal day-to-day activities (laundry, doing the dishes, etc.). There are different settings to look at also. Try to get one that doesn't sit up so high. Good luck!

First of all, whatever diamond you choose will survive through anything ... it will most definitely not break.
As for some "issues" which may arise, those are going to come from the setting and not the diamond itself. A taller setting is going to be more awkward and is going to get caught on things for the first few months ... your fiance isn't going to be used to wearing a ring like that and it might get caught on things and hit plates, etc.
My suggestion would be to get a lower setting ... it won't be protruding too high and won't get in the way as much. Make sure you opt for the platinum setting (not necessarily the ring) because it is going to be stronger than a white or yellow gold.

A solitaire ring has diamond embedded in it. Diamond is the hardest thing known to man. You cant break a solitaire ring but you could loose the diamond, it falls out of the ring while washing dishes etc.
But people usually don’t wear a solitaire ring while doing normal-every day stuff, it is usually worn on special occasions.

a good ring should not break
buy the ring that you have your eye on.
most rings catch on clothes so its not just an engagement ring and washing the dishes ... she can take it off whilst doing the dishes or buy her a dishwasher :D

Diamonds are hard, you won't break it. The only fear you have is that the jeweler did a poor job setting the stone and that it gets caught. If you are nervous, just ask for a low setting, this way there is less of a chance of banging it.
