80 is a special birthday and needs a special present.
Why don't you get one of those photos frames with about 12 gaps in for photos and fill it with photos of your family, like yourselves as children, your parents, him and your gran when they were younger etc. He'll love it - it'll have pride of place on his wall!

We are getting ready to celebrate my grandfather's 80th birthday this year and we are going ALL OUT! For starters we are arranging to have a family reunion. He is fully aware of this and is helping with the planning. We plan on having a formal dinner on Saturday, with just the family, and a "friends and family" picnic on Sunday (catered of course so no one gets stuck worth all the work!) Then my husband, daughter, and I are giving him a hot air balloon ride for his birthday present! He has always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon, but has never been given the opportunity... so we are giving it to him! He will be soooo thrilled I just can't wait to hear him talk about it!
Also, we face the same delimma as to what to give him for Christamas every year: we have devised a plan that is a win-win situation for everyone! Around the beginning of December we take him to Epoct at Walt Disney World and pay for the day. He had never been there before and he loves going back year after year and seeing the sights and riding and experiencing the attractions. The park is all decorated for the holidays and he gets to meet all the Santa Clause's from around the world (and so does my 3 year old!) It makes for some great photo opportunities, and it really puts us in the Christmas spirit. He really enjoys himself, we get to spend time with him, and he dosen't recieve ANOTHER useless trinket cluttering up his house, intead he gets memories that will last a lifetime!

Being I am a grandmother, we really do not expect gifts from our grandchildren. At this age there is really nothing I need for the house or clothing. What means the most to me is a card, a hug, make him his favorite cake or cookies, put together a scrap book of pics or you and him, something sentimental. Sit with him for the afternoon, listen to his stories, even if you have already heard them over and over. Letting him know that you love, cherish and respect him will be the greatest gift you can ever give him.

What about making a personalised family photo album of significant events in his life?
Include when he was growing up, getting married, birth of his children (your parent) and birth of you ...and any major events such as nice holidays etc. Memories last a lifetime and it would be a wonderful tribute and keepsake.
We did one for my Dads 65th birthday and called it 'this is your life'

How about a personalised magazine cover with his picture on it...? Saw them on a website recently called something like gift experience. They did one that looked like Hello magazine. Very cool present.

Put together a collection of photographs from his past, so that he can relive the happy memories over and over again.

Does he have any old pictures you could grab and fix up...like of when he was a kid or his wedding pic. Put it in a beautiful frame....etc...etc.. Or maybe go have a HUGE family picture taken with everyone. Something like that...
