I got told once that it may have something to do with a boat when there is a man over board the crew pull the pin and the sail comes down and it stops immediatly. any other answers or conformation would be great

those were some good answers. let me add at least two more...

1. In cowboy terminology, to pull or cut your pin was to literally leave a camp or a cattle drive with your horse. the pin was a device placed into the ground in which you could tie up your horse for the night: by pulling or cutting your pin it meant you were leaving in a hurry, often disreputably.

2. in railroad terminology, to pull the pin meant to disconnect the cars from the train or in other words to leave the main item to go off on your own, to be separate from the plan.

3. I have often heard of the term to mean to get out of the situation, and go your own way as well.

Yeah, I wouldn't go with the phrase...I think it would visually not work in a tattoo. But the pin up girl sounds like a good idea.

Comes from the hand grenade pull the pin is to see what happens but it could blow up in your face.
