Hang on people - the question is about the UK
Up here in Scotland (also part of the UK) we have been banned from smoking in pubs for nearly a year.
Wales and Northern Ireland (again part of the UK) will be smoke free in April.
And the Johnny come latelys in England will be last in July

At the moment it is OK in England but a new law is being introduced on 1st July 2007 which will ban anyone from smoking in a public place. It is already banned in N. ireland and Scotland (not sure about Wales?)
There will be no problem about smoking at home.

Not yet, but I it can't come soon enough! It seems to be popular opinion now (even amoungst smokers) that it's not as 'high class' as it used to be. In the 50's it was certainly considered to be very classy, whereas these days it's disgusting!
Pubs do have the choice whether they allow smoking or not at the moment. To increase their profits, most pubs will allow smoking but for non-smokers (which is no longer the minority) it's not a pleasent place to be. The reason for the ban is to make us all a lot healthier and I'm all for it!

No smoking in pubs is allowed, until the 1st july 2007, then smoking is banned in all enclosed public places. You can smoke in your own homes.

I think it's a bit pathetic. Why don't they have some smoking and some non smoking pubs. Then the staff and the drinkers can make their own choice. I know where i'd be sat.
