Hey whoever reads this. Im thinking about getting a Shar pei. I have had dogs all my life apart from the past few years where I have been living in apartments and units. Would I still be able to get a Shar pei to live peacefully in an indoor environment.

I have just heard that they may fret if left alone for long periods of time. I ask this because he/she will be left in the small yard/garage while I am working. Are they quite happy in small yards as long they get exercise when I get back from work?

We own and breed shar-pei , they are mostly an indoor dog as they cant handle the heat ect very well. our dogs seem to do just fine with no one home and dont have seperation anxiety . but then again i'd say it also depends on the breeder you get your puppy from andhow they have raised the puppy thuse far. none of our puppies have had any issues going tothe new homes with owners that both work. i dont know if i'd leave them outdoors all day though as the heat can be a problem for shar-pei .. do alot of reasearch on this bred as well to make sure it is the one for you. good luck!!!!!!!!1

You should start off looking at your local animal shelter first. Leaving any dog in a yard or garage unsupervised for long periods of time isn't a good idea. It could get out, be stolen, get hurt, etc. Shar Pei's aren't exactly small dogs either, and I know they have a coat that needs special care. If you're really wanting a Shar Pei, you should try finding and talking to a breeder. You can find them at http://www.cspca.com/BD/breedersdirectory.htm or try a rescue group. www.petfinder.com

I owned two shar pei for many years until one died at 12 years of age and the other at 14. This is a great breed but they are energetic. I found mine did calm down as they became adults- about 1.5 - 2 years of age. Meantime, she needs lots of exercise. If you exercise her first and work on training a tired dog, you may get better results. Whether she is spayed before or after her first heat will not affect how soon she calms down- it is just growing up and acting more like an adult. I personally would spay her before the heat as you are not planning on breeding her. If you have yorkies around , you have a chance of her becoming pregnant I know it may seem impossible, but I have seen stranger things happen. Shar pei are smart but stubborn. Mine wowouldook at me like "I know what you want me to do, I'm trying to decide if it is worth the bother." Please, please socialize this breed- take her everywhere with you-let her meet all kinds of new people and dogs while she is young. This breed needs it much more than yorkes do. She will be a better dog for it. And if you have not already, start obedience training. Good luck!

Shar Peis are awesome I grew up with a black one and he was the coolest dog ever. It is true that they love to run around and play alot so I dunno about leaving him for long periods of time. But my sharpei loved to run and was probably the fastest dog I have seen.
