True. Cigars are not meant to be smoked but puffed. The cigar shop cigars are usually handcrafted pieces meant to be seasoned properly in a humidor for future enjoyment. Cigar afficianados would say that you taste the smoke but not inhaling it. Main reason is by the time you finished smoking an entire cigar your lungs would hurt very badly or you would be very sick. I enjoy a nice cigar every once in a while and inhale occasionally but its just not feasible or advisable to suck one of the bad boys down. Simply put, it hurts.

No a real cigar (and by real I mean hand rolled from pure tobacco leaf, not processed machine rolled cigars(havatampas and black and milds)) doesn't compare to any of the above. I too tried pretty much everything, I worked in a Cigar shop for quite a while. A cigar is much different from a cigarette, cigaretts are a quick fix (unfortunatly I do smoke cigs too) whereas a cigar is something that takes time to enjoy. As said before cigars aren't to be inhaled, trust me you'll feel it without inhaling. Plan on an hour to smoke where you don't have to be active, never able to enjoy a cigar when I was working. As far as selection, plan to spend $10 US, cheap cigars suck. Don't believe that just because it cost $30 that is good(I have smoked $20 some odd cigars that were awfull), my favorite is only $9. Go to a good shop, even the best cigar isn't any good if it isn't stored properly, plan to smoke it soon after you buy it, without proper storage they can go stale in a matter of a few days. Every cigar has its own flavor profile, finding your favorite takes time and alot of cigars. There three main components which will give you an idea of the flavor of the cigar:

the wrapper, the biggest key to flavor
the type of binder
the filler

Cigars come with 4 basic types of wrapper from darkest to lightest:
-Maduro- almost black-chocolate brown, usually the most complex flavor
-Sun grown- complex usually a slight sweetnes
-Claro- slighty flatter, dryer flavor (most consider these mild though I don't find that to always be the case)
-Candella- almost green in color, and somewhat sharp in flavor (to me somewhat harsh)

These types can be from various types of leaf although the most popular is connecticut shade, the difference is in how they are processed and fermented, maduro being fermented the longest

Most people to begin with start out with a claro wrapper, some good brands to start off with (without naming any over $12) are:
-Macanudo-probably one of the most popular with beginners
-Montecristo
-Montesino
-Punch
-Arturo Fuente
most of these in shorter lengths will be from $6-$8

There are two measurements for a cigar, ring gauge(diameter) and length. Start off with a shorter cigar, though I prefer a larger ring guage, they tend to draw better. Don't go and get the biggest you can find, you may wind up turning green before you finish it, work up to it. And from there just experiment!

My favorite are:
La Gloria Cubana, Series R #7 Maduro $9-$10
Ashton VSG Torpedo $12
Oliva Bold $8
Punch Rare Corojo $7
Trinidad $13

Oh and one other thing most beginners don't realize, with a premium gicar it must be cut, the ends are completely closed (cap). Most shops will cut them for you if you ask.

I have smoked a number of tobacco products. The big cigars are not designed to be inhaled. One is supposed to savor the taste. There is a wide range of tastes from mild to strong. I am now an ex-smoker and do not recommend any tobacco.

Oh yeah. The best are the macho ones from Cuba. They have the most amazing taste and they're usually pretty big. Sadly, these are illegal to bring onto the States cuz we don't do any trade with Cuba. But that doesn't mean you can't smoke them in another country...

Yes, I have a small humidor and smoke them occasionally. It's an acquired taste, some make me hungry.
