i live in tennessee so i'm sure you have to be 18 to buy one, but i'm thinking about having my mom buy me one (with my money of course) and i live in the country so i'm sure it's legal to shoot a gun here in my own back yard, but if it isn't where would be a good place to shoot a gun at? note: unfortunately there's no woods close to my house :(

For your first gun, a .22 bolt action is a fine choice.
I strongly recommend you wait on a scope and learn to shoot well using just the iron sights. It makes you a much better shooter because you focus on your breathing, grip, hold and outside factors like wind and the variables of different ammo brands, rather than wonding if your scope is zeroed in and be constantly adjusting it. After you develop some good shooting proficiency, then add a nice scope.
You should be able to find a good used .22 bolt action for around $90 to $140.
Look for Winchester, Remington, Marlin, Glenfield, Sears (J.C.Higgins, Ranger, Ted Williams) Savage and Stevens brands. That's what you'll find in your gun shops and pawn shops there.
Ask around with adult hunters and shooters you know....family, church members, teachers, coaches, etc. and ask them if they could go with you to look at rifles, if they have a favorite gun shop and also if they could give you safety and shooting lessons. You will find many folks who will be glad to help a first time shooter out. It will also go a lot smoother with your Mom if she knows you'll be getting some guidance and instruction from a responsible adult.
Semi-autos are fun, although they tend to be a little less accurate as a group than bolt actions. I am a big fan of the Marlin Model 60 as a previous poster mentioned.....it is the best selling rifle ever produced and it's accurate right out the box. I think Wal Mart has them for around $129 new. It's a much better deal than a Ruger 10/22, which is $199 and really needs another $200 invested to make it accurate. I have had both and would go with the Marlin in a heartbeat, althoug I am a real "bare bones" kind of shooter and all those 10/22 accessories to me are just toys.
Good luck and happy shooting.

NOBODY needs a .22 rifle that costs more than $250-$300.00. Wal-Mart has a beautiful stainless steel 10/22 rifle for about $220.00 as well as the Marlin model 60SS. The 10/22 carbine is about $160.00 and well worth it. Bolt actions can be a little less most of the time. The Remington and Mossbergs are good choices, too. Pawn shops usually have a supply of .22s at reasonable prices. Shop around. If you live in the country, have fun shooting up your back yard. Just remember to have a good backdrop like a hillside to shoot into. A .22 can be dangerous for 1 mile.

I would check into the Mossberg 802 Plinkster. The 802 version is bolt action. I bought one last year around christmas time, and it a blast to shoot. I also wanted only a bolt gun. I had shot many different semi-autos (Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60) and all of them seemed to jam up too easy. With a bolt action, you are controlling the action and therefore the tendency to jam is greatly decreased. The Mossberg 802 also has a detachable magazine that loads from the bottom, which i think is much easier to use than tubular magazines. It's magazine is similar to a semi-auto pistols, in that you can see how many rounds you have left in it. They are also fairly inexpensive, around the holidays they were selling for $80 at ***** Sporting Goods, but they are originally a little over $100. That's about half of what a Ruger 10/22 would cost.

I own quite a collection of .22 caliber weapons. 5 rifles and 2 handguns. out of the rifles my favorite (and most acurate) would have to be the Marlin 54. it is a lever action tube fed magazine chamered for 22 LR and 22 mag. This was my first gun, I baught an adult version of the same rifle when i was 16. I also have a Ruger 10/22. it is ok, I use it for plinking not as accurate as I like to be for Competition shooting. I have a mosburg Pump action rifle and some no name single shot bolt action.
My handguns include a Ruger single action witha 12" extended barrel and a ruger semi auto. THe revolver is my favorite handgun.
as for prices, I baught the marlin brand new for around 130 bucks, the ruger 10/22 I baught for 50 bucks from a friend of mine who was hurting for cash. The pump action was around 80-90 bucks second hand, and the bolt action I baught at a pawnshop for around 40 bucks. the revolver and semi auto handguns run me the most around 600 bucks each, but then I also baught them brand new with all the extra goodies I could find and afford.
So in conclusion just shop arround, check out the pawn shops, the firearm traders, local adds, and ask around...deals are out there to find...you just hae to look.

Bolt action .22's are a good choice and usually a bit more accurate than a semi-auto.
Link below to the website for Marlins .22 bolt action guns.

And a link to pricing from one company on them.

The Marlin 981T is around $170. You could always look for an older used Model 781 or 881 too. They're all fine guns.

I've seen used .22 bolt action for as little as $50. Gun laws are different from state to state and I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 18 to purchase any firearm. .22 ammo fires from pistols also, so you'd have to provide a Driver's License, in Texas for instance, in order to purchase and sign for the ammo.
The semi-auto variety can be dangerous because it never is 100% certain the gun is fully unloaded. You'd be better off finding a shooting class and learning about firing techniques. Remember, you must have the landowner's permission to shoot.
If you were born after 1964, in Texas, you have to have a hunting certification course.

I bought a Mossberg Plinsker at Dick's Sporting Goods for $80 (it was half price the day after Thanksgiving). It is regularly $160.
I would suggest you spend closer to $200 and buy the Ruger 10/22.

I've seen them as low as ~95 at walmart, new, but you can find something new and still in good shape for $100-200. I was offered a stainless Ruger 10/22 (9K10/22RPF) for around $150 (SRP $295)
