House cats are one step away from being wild .... even today. They can live in the wild more easily than most of our pet animals and even enjoy it at times. Most pet animals, dogs, birds, fish, rodents, will die of starvation or the cold. Not cats. They're survivors.

Egyptians had placed cats atop the gods status pole many thousands of years ago. They have been seen on pyramid walls many times. Cheetahs were used for hunting. Our thoughts of "house cats" were also pictured and were probably used as varmint hunters when not being deified.

As with cats today, those cats of old were probably there on their own terms, not man's.

I think there is a Rudyard Kipling story about this. It's one of his "just so" stories.

Anyway, The house cat we know and love today comes from an African wild cat from western Africa. If you saw a picture of it, you'd swear it was a normal house cat. It's wild coloration is similar to a tabby.

Where we domesticated dogs for protection, cats seemed to come into our lives for their own reasons. As humans became more and more adept at hunting and gathering, we also became pretty good at storing food. Where there is stored food, there are mice and rats and other small rodents. Where there are mice and rats and other small rodents there are cats looking to feed on them. Because we became a source of food for the wild cat, they became habituated to us, and we let them in because they saved our food suply by eating the rodents. Then we made them gods...but that's a different question...
