I have used programs to clean the registry, these can cause you more headaches than they are worth. The operating system relies completely on the registry to function, 1 incorrect edit can render your computer unbootable. I would stay away from this kind of software.
If your just wanting to make your computer run a little faster, try clicking on the start button, click run, then type "msconfig". Now click on the startup tab.
Here you will find all the programs that start when windows starts, some are unnecessary, like msn messenger. Make sure you can see the whole file name under Command, your looking for things that start with c:\program, these are programs you have installed, dont uncheck anything labeled c:\ windows.
Unchecking items that you dont often use will make windows run much faster, and this wont harm your system, because it doesnt delete anything......
Hope this helps, if you do decide to use reg edit programs, backup any important info.

You can also remove a programs using registry cleaner. It also comes with a backup feature if you want to keep a record of your current registry. well, use it if your computer is running slow rather than the usual.

the registry is like the index of the operating system and stores information about your programs. when these 'references' become out of date and the index needs redoing.
a registry cleaner puts things in the right place and removes out of date info thus allowing it to run quicker
