This old man has been through the wringer... he is aged... he is wearing tattered clothing... probably poor, but not playing or singing for money [by lack of it in the painting]... he is deeply feeling the music as he strums the guitar with his right thumb... his sunken eyes and cheeks portray a hunger, but his playing the guitar suggests that his heart is crying out through the music, as if to tell the world around him of his despair... sing to the world of his loss... his joy... his dream [which appears to have left him].

He makes me feel like him in a way... I play guitar, but I am a 65 year old Christian... widowed, but joyous in knowing where my bride of 37 years is... But... I am not as lonely, forlorn, empty as he appears.

Your teacher is asking YOU how the painting makes YOU feel. He or she is not asking US how it makes US feel. The whole idea behind teachers asking questions like this is to encourage students to think for themselves, to learn to use their own minds and learn to express observations using their own words.

You can research other paintings in the same style by studying the other paintings from Picasso's 'Blue Period.'
