In the rural South, and perhaps in other parts of the country, there comes the time
for "The Snipe Hunt." Most all young boys are handed a gunny sack, a light of sorts,
sometimes a whistle, and are taken deep into the woods to hunt Snipe. It's a right of
passage and something which must be done alone.
The snipe hunt by tradition is a rather simple affair. Legend has it..the snipe
is nocturnal and is best hunted at night when it leaves its snipe nest. Webster defines
the Snipe as a member of the Sandpiper family, but to this day no one has ever really
seen a Snipe, much less captured one. At least to my knowledge!! (By the way, the
fact that there really is long-billed bird called a Snipe has almost nothing to do with this
ritual hunt.)

Snipe also known as Woodcock by some hunters are migratory birds that feed on insects and worms and will not stay in an area when the ground starts to freeze. They are known for the sound they make when flying doooooooo sound. That the way I describe ti I am sure others will have better sound ideas. The birds are good to eat and great to hunt. Side not the meat is dark breast and white legs. The hunting of them is just like quail hunting but the birds are found in the woods more often than out in the open like quail. ps hunting them is also a prank by some

A snipe hunt, also known as a fool's errand or wild goose chase, is one of a class of practical jokes that involves experienced people making fun of newcomers by giving them an impossible or imaginary task.
For example, inexperienced campers are told about a bird or animal called the snipe as well as a usually ridiculous method of catching it, such as running around the woods carrying a bag or making strange noises. Real snipes (which are often mistakenly thought to be non-existent) are difficult to catch for experienced hunters, so much so that the word "sniper" is derived from it to refer to anyone skilled enough to shoot one. The hunt never succeeds for novices. In another, more cruel version, the unsuspecting "snipe hunter" is secretly abandoned to see how long will it take for him to notice this and start to panic.
Snipe hunts are similar to hazing except that the abuse is embarrassment from trickery rather than physical humiliation.
The name comes from a family of shorebirds named snipe that are notoriously difficult to shoot. However, the term "snipe hunt" does not describe a hunt for actual prey. Often, the pranksters will tell the victim, "we need to spread out," and then go home.

i have never hunted snipe, but i have read lots of stuff about them. they are smaller then a chicken, they are about one tenth of the size of a chicken. they are closely related to the woodcock . they are found in soft, wet boggy ground. they have a long beak simmiler to that of the woodcock. they use this to probe for earthworms in the soil. there are two kinds of snipe, the common snipe, and the jacksnipe. most people who hunt snipe use a 20 guage shotgun with a improved-cylinder bore, and number 8 or 9 shot. i hope this helped. dont listen to all the other people here, they are just making fun of you.go to google images and type snipe. i just did it and it has a few pictures off the birds.here is a link to a video of snipe that people just shot.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W562xQVvzcU
i hope this helped!!!!!

You can spend a long time in the field hunting snipe. Don't forget to take a sky-hook with. Your legs will thank you.

while this is usually just a joke played on people were they get them to do stupid things there are such things as snipes little birds that are easily scared meaning that you usually have to take long rifle shots at these birds years ago anyone who could do this tough hunt had good marksmanship and was then named a sniper like a military sniper

It's hunting for small quick birds about the size of a chicken. It was said to be the test of a true marksman to be able to shoot one. This is where the military term sniper comes from.

There are birds about the size of a chicken that you can catch with a pillow case. But you have to take your clothes off because even the rustling of your clothing will scare them away.
