The leftover foods are thrown into the garbage.
This is done where I work in order to avoid any legal suit if somebody gets sick or poisoned.

Hospitals might donate it, restaurants throw the food away.

A terrible waste.

I work at Vons (Safeway) and the service deli throws all the extra food away, the chicken and potatoe wedges and whatnot. So I would have to assume that most restaurants do the same. Business practices. There are probably a few private owned restaurants that donate the food.

We cannot eat the leftover food or we could be fired/suspended for stealing.

Restaurants must throw their food out. It is against health and safety to keep it or give it away. I'm not sure about hospitals.

i work at a nursing home as a cook ,some foods we keep such as meat and use it up within 2 days, with the exception of fish, potato products,to use as a sub meal,we never reheat anything twice, the rest gets thrown away, whiich is not much because we know how much food to prepare.
