First, it will cost you around $2,500 in immigration application fees and other costs. Then depending on where you plan on living, I will use estimates for the lower mainland of British Columbia, as that is where I live, and also it's one of the more expensive areas, so if you can manage here, anyplace else should be okay too.
I would agree $1,000 monthly for rent and utilities for an apt.
I would estimate food at $500 monthly for a couple (cooking at home, and an occassional meal out)
and $150 monthly for paper products, soaps, laundry costs, etc.
Public transportation, $150 for monthly transit passes for two people (a car will cost more of course)
Those would be the basics ... add on to that any other expenses, including entertainment, clothing, purchases.
So, based on that, a minimum of $14,000; preferably around $17,000 to $20,000 to have a good margin for unexpected expenses.

let's see....
house rent: ~$1000/month
Food: ~$800/month/person
so i guess if you need to live in Canada for half a year you'd need around $15600 minimum
It also depends on where you live too...say every thing in Vancouver, BC will never cost the same as those in the East cost.
good luck
