Brake shoes front and back wheels ,in the mid 60's the started using disk brakes on the front wheels and shoes on the rear. now days mostly disk brakes on all 4 wheels

In older machines, their used to be a Metallic disc and a brake shoe in each of the wheels. When the brake is applied, the brake shoe glides over the rotating disc and makes it to stop this makes a vehicle to stop. Now a days most of the car makers especially the Luxury car makers use Carbon brakes which is far more effective.....NMN

They used band brakesanddrum brakes, first mechanical and then hydraulic. Early vehicles had only rear brakes. Some had a drive shaft band brakes.

Originally, they had a steel band wrapped on a drum that turned with the wheel. If you wanted to stop. you would pull the lever and the band would tighten. Then they progressed to a mechanical lever on a pedal that forced a steel wedge against the tire. If you want the whole story, check out the link below.

Did you ever see a t v show called the "Flinstones", were they used ,foot brakes, and the stationer brake was a boulder,,,,,,,,,, what do you think they used seeing brake design hasnt changed all that much.
