Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Focus your mind on the rising and falling of your abdomen as you breath. Mentally concentrate on this one simple event and as you find other thoughts entering your mind push them aside and return to rising and falling. Be aware at all times of these other thoughts intruding and control and shelve them.
5 or 10 minutes of this is enough at first but you should gradually find that you can concentrate on this single issue and empty everything else from your mind.
You are learning by this to focus your attention and to understand that your mind is without discipline and wanting to run off in different directions.
If find that concentrating on driving also allows focus to the exclusion of irrelevance.
The aim is to control the "monkey mind" which wants to go off exploring after gaining only a superficial understanding of the last thing it tried to discover.

Sitting comfortably or lying down. The idea is to relax the mind and body and try to clear the mind of thought and clutter. It takes practice. In the beginning don't take it all so seriously. Just take your time and let it come to you. In other words if you don't have great success in the beginning don't quit or think that you suck at it
Get a book about Vipassana Meditation. Buy it or get it from a library. Google it for more info

You have to try many ways and find out the one that works for you. Its kind of like asking someone what is the best ice cream? While there are going to be many people who say Vanilla, your not everyone is going to have the same answer.
