DIVX is a codec a coder -decoder, it converts a video files such as DVD video .vob files into divx .avi, it is mainly used to compress the dvd video std 4.7 gb files to 700mb std disk. for your question you can transfer files to hard drive encode into divx transfer into a cd or dvd and again playback on your portable player. it doesnt give any high definition but you can only feel the DVD quality thats it, if dont want to carry bunch of dvds then encode into divx and transfer them to data DVD 4.7gb can hold upto 7 high quality divx encoded movies
